How we handle canopy cleaning in Penwood
We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you have grease dripping from the canopy edge and a filter housing caked in grease, we can put it right, from grease gutters, island canopies and wall canopies onwards.
In a village or hamlet like Penwood, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are normally a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.
We’re CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. We are also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we have been trading since 2009.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.
What your team can do, and what needs us
When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
Grease, kitchens and Penwood
The FSA’s data shows about 3 pubs, bars and clubs registered within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Penwood. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service covers Penwood. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. Food hygiene inspections in Penwood are the job of Basingstoke and Deane council’s environmental health team. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.
Highclere Castle, about 1.7 miles south, is one of the historic houses near Penwood; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of St Michael Archangel or elsewhere in Penwood, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

What a clean will not put right
It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:
- Electrical faults in the canopy
- A canopy undersized for the equipment
- Bent or broken filters
If you’re not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.
What the work covers
- Baffle filters
- Island canopies
- Wall canopies
- Plenum chambers
- Grease gutters
- Canopy light fittings
What we are called out for in Penwood
Steam and condensation make canopy grease harder to deal with. Water vapour condenses on the cooler canopy surfaces and drips, carrying grease with it. The result is sticky streaks and drips onto the range.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Filters that clog soon after cleaning
- An EHO comment about the canopy
- Smoke hanging around the canopy during service
- A filter housing caked in grease
If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Woolton Hill Junior School or anywhere near Penwood, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.
Comparing quotes
- When the next visit should be, and why
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
- What paperwork you get at the end
- Whether they’re fully insured
Between visits
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:
- Never run the range with a filter out
- Don’t scrape the canopy with metal tools
- Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
- Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
Where the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If the job covers only the canopy, the paperwork reflects that.
Clean filters are the canopy’s first defence. Keep them on a regular cleaning or exchange cycle, and never cook with one missing. The plenum behind them stays cleaner.
Different parts, different methods
Island canopies
Island canopies often have filters on two sides. We work round the canopy, cleaning each filter bank and plenum.
Plenums and filter housings
Behind neglected filters, the plenum can be heavily coated. We remove thick grease by hand, then degrease.
What happens on the day
There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and photos. The middle part takes longest, which takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Seeing the system in pictures first means the trip to Penwood can be planned properly.
- Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
- We protect everything below once it has cooled.
- Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
- We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
- You get photos of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.
Getting ready for the visit
- Tell us where we can park and unload
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
Get a fixed quote
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from your pictures and details or, where that is not enough, a survey on site. After that, you get a fixed price for the work, before we start.

Penwood questions
Can you come to Penwood after we close?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. That way a site in Penwood doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. Just ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with your opening times and we will plan around them.
Is Penwood within the area you cover?
Yes. Penwood is within the area we cover across London and the South East. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.
Who is the responsible person?
The Fire Safety Order 2005 calls them the responsible person: often the employer, owner or occupier. Landlords, facilities managers and managing agents can also hold responsibility.
What happens if you can’t reach some of it?
The report shows them clearly. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, and we can fit those.
How do you protect the area?
With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. We keep the work contained and leave the area clean.
What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?
Every clean comes with a photo report, listing what was cleaned. A full TR19 clean adds a certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.
Do you offer emergency callouts?
Yes, any time. If something urgent happens, like a fan failing or damage after a fire, call our 24/7 line and we will talk you through the next steps.
Are you insured?
Yes. Full insurance covers our work and have been trading since 2009.
