Wall canopies

A long wall canopy may hold several sections of filters. Each section’s plenum and housing is cleaned in turn, with pictures for each.

Grease troughs and gutters

A blocked or full trough is the usual cause of grease dripping from the canopy. Cleaning it clears the drip.

Canopy cleaning in Inkpen

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers wall canopies, plenum chambers and grease gutters, and the jobs we see most are wet, greasy drips from the hood and a greasy hood noticed by an inspector.

In a village or hamlet like Inkpen, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are typically a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

The process

We turn up at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes a few hours for most canopies. Visits to a village like Inkpen are booked in advance, at a time that suits whoever runs the site.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

How to prepare

  • Clear the space around the work
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down

Advice

What happens if it’s left?

A blocked plenum and clogged filters cut the airflow at the canopy. Smoke and heat hang around the cooking line while the fan strains. A clean canopy and plenum let the extract do its job. In a small place like Inkpen, a system that fails can take a site out of use.

We do not list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll talk you through it.

Your questions about canopy cleaning in Inkpen

Can you get to a site in Inkpen?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Inkpen is covered. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Do you work overnight in Inkpen?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. The work in Inkpen can fit around your hours. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

What is TR19?

A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19® is the recognised way to show grease is under control.

How much does canopy cleaning cost in Inkpen?

It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. To get one, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with the site type, opening hours and a few pictures.

Does a canopy clean meet TR19?

You can have the canopy cleaned on its own, but it won’t cover the ductwork or fan. TR19 Grease covers everything the grease travels through, at intervals set by BESA guidance.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. Full insurance covers our work, and we have been trading since 2009.

Who is the responsible person?

The Fire Safety Order 2005 calls them the responsible person: often the employer, owner or occupier. Landlords, facilities managers and managing agents can also hold responsibility.

Canopy cleaning in Inkpen: the local picture

Inkpen sits within the area of Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. At about 60 miles from central London, Inkpen sits well inside the area we cover. The visit is fixed around your opening hours, not ours.

For schools such as Inkpen Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed. If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Inkpen (Stargroves is about 3.2 miles south-east), fitting access panels needs care. Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Michael or anywhere around Inkpen, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

Inkpen is about 6 miles west of Newbury, in West Berkshire. From the centre of Inkpen to the outskirts, we cover canopy cleaning for every kind of premises, from small sites to large estates. We cover 155 places across West Berkshire, from busy centres to quieter spots. There’s also a page for Reading, about 22 miles away.

Work in RG17 is surveyed, quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. Canopy cleaning is available to premises on Folly Road, Post Office Road and Robins Hill and nearby roads. Neighbouring places we cover for canopy cleaning include Inkpen Common (1 mile south-east), Upper Green (1 mile south), Hell Corner (1 mile east), Lower Green (1 mile west) and Kintbury (2 miles north-east). Further out, we also cover Newbury (6 miles east), Thatcham (9 miles east), Speenhamland (6 miles east), Hungerford (3 miles north-west), Lambourn (9 miles north) and Shaw (7 miles east).

A little further out are Hamstead Marshall 3 (3.3 miles north-east). Open spaces near Inkpen include Kintbury Newt Ponds and Inkpen Hill.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • The size of the system
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you are unsure, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Helping us quote

Photos let us diagnose from a distance. The most useful are:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Wide pictures of the system and the area around it

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Inkpen

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Every visit ends with a dated report and pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across West Berkshire. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.

What a clean will not put right

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so these are the things it won’t cover:

  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)

If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will say what we think.
