How kitchen extract cleaning works in West Sussex
Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract systems since 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 and are fully insured. The work covers extract fans, canopies and hoods and plenums and filters, and people most often call us about a system with no record of a TR19 clean and a kitchen taken over without any extract records.
The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, while signing off means the written report and pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes as long as the system needs, from a few hours to several planned visits.
- First comes a survey of the whole system, by pictures or a visit.
- Set points are tested for grease thickness and the quote is fixed before any work starts.
- With the kitchen closed and equipment off and cool, the area is sheeted.
- Canopy, plenum, filters, duct runs, risers, fan and discharge are all cleaned to TR19® Grease.
- We test again, photograph the result and issue your TR19 certificate and photo report.
How we quote
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before work begins.

Getting a quote
Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
Near you in Crawley
Around Crawley, our work takes us to kitchens and buildings near Friary Church of St Francis and St Anthony, St Wilfrid's Catholic School and Tilgate Park and the streets around them. You will also find The George Hotel (less than half a mile north), Three Bridges Junior School (less than half a mile south-east) and St Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School (less than half a mile south-east). There’s a railway station in Crawley itself: Crawley station. Nearby you’ll also find Crawley Hospital (0.5 miles north-west) and County Mall (within half a mile north-east). Green spaces nearby include Tilgate Lake.
Where we work in West Sussex
Our kitchen extract cleaning work across West Sussex takes in places such as Crawley, Horsham and Worthing and the villages in between. We cover every place we list for West Sussex, 371 in all, with cleans booked around trading hours.
We work across London and the South East, and West Sussex is part of that area. Every job is surveyed first and quoted at a fixed price. Near the coast in West Sussex, salt and damp speed up corrosion in fans, ducts and dampers, and corrosion is one of the things that can stop a fire damper closing.
Crawley: Church and community hall kitchens, near Friary Church of St Francis and St Anthony or anywhere around Crawley, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Crawley Hospital is the nearest hospital to Crawley, about 0.5 miles north-west.
Why deal with it now?
Every week without a clean adds another layer. BESA guidance says the mean should not go above 200 microns between cleans, and 500 microns or more at any point needs immediate spot cleaning. Heavy build-up takes longer to remove than regular cleans.
Comparing quotes
- What’s included in the scope, part by part
- How they set the interval to the next visit
- What paperwork you get at the end
- If they look at the system before pricing
When it’s something else
Some problems need a different service or another trade:
- A grease trap that needs emptying
- Extraction that cannot cope with the cooking because of its design
- Ductwork that’s corroded, split or leaking (that is for a ductwork contractor)
For landlords and multi-site operators
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.
We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.
Between visits
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Switch the fan on before cooking starts
- Tell us when the extract starts to drip or smell
- Keep the TR19 certificate and photo report in the maintenance log
- Give the canopy a daily wipe
The certificate records when the clean was done, where and by whom. Keep it in the maintenance log with your fire risk assessment so it’s ready when anyone asks to see it.
Run the extract whenever the kitchen is cooking. Switching it off early leaves vapour to settle on the canopy and plenum, and the next clean has more to do.
Fixed quotes for kitchen extract cleaning in West Sussex
A fixed price needs a few facts first. We look at:
- Any permits to work or inductions
- How many systems or sites are involved
- Travel, parking and unloading
- Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.
What to send for a quote
Photos let us diagnose from a distance. Try to include:
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
If you need kitchen extract cleaning in West Sussex, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos. Tell us what kind of premises it is and when it’s open, plus pictures or the previous report if they’re to hand. We normally send a fixed quote within one working day.
West Sussex questions
Can you quote from pictures?
Typically, yes. Send a few wide pictures plus close-ups of panels, filters or grilles, and a fixed quote usually follows within one working day. If photos are not enough, we’ll survey first.
How long does a kitchen extract clean take?
It takes as long as the system needs, from a few hours to several planned visits. The survey tells us how long your system will need.
When do you clean the extract?
Cleans are timed to avoid service. Most kitchens book us overnight or at weekends, so you don’t lose a service.
Do you clean the whole extract system or just the canopy?
Everything from canopy to discharge: the canopy, the plenum behind the filters, the filters, horizontal ducts, vertical risers, the fan and the discharge, plus attenuators where fitted. Anything we cannot reach is recorded on the report.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.
How much notice do you need?
That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.
