Canopy cleaning near Maryland

Canopy cleaning in Maryland, done properly

Of the whole extract system, the canopy is the bit on show. It’s also the first place cooking vapour meets, so grease gathers on its inner skin, seams and gutters. Our canopy clean covers the shell inside and out, plus the plenum and the filter housing. If you’re dealing with condensation running down the canopy and heavy deposits behind the grease filters, we can help.

Across London, many commercial kitchens are squeezed into basements and narrow back-of-house spaces, with extract ducts that can climb several floors to discharge at roof level. For a kitchen in Maryland, that typically means a longer system to clean and more access panels to plan around.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

Looking after it afterwards

How long the results last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill
  • Keep the fan on through service
  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle

The report gives a recommended next clean date. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.

Keep the fan running throughout service and for a short while after. Turning the fan off early lets vapour settle on the hood.

The process

Every visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, do the work, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Before any visit in Maryland, we agree where the van can stop and how equipment reaches the system.

  1. We start by checking the canopy and what’s behind its filters.
  2. Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
  3. Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
  4. Plenum, housing, troughs and canopy are all cleaned and checked.
  5. You get pictures of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.

Before we arrive

  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas

What a clean will not put right

Before booking, it helps to know what’s not included:

  • A light fitting that does not work
  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)

If you are not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Maryland questions

Can you work in Maryland outside opening hours?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. The site is handed back ready to open. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Maryland in the summer holidays?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 51 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Maryland. Just ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with your term dates and we will plan around them.

How much does canopy cleaning cost?

Size, condition, access and working hours all affect the cost. Ask us for a fixed quote, normally ready within one working day.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

That depends on who controls the premises. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, plus pictures of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.

What do you do to protect the area?

With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. We keep the work contained and leave the area clean.

Are you accredited?

Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, alongside BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.

Why does grease run off the canopy edge?

Usually because the troughs or gutters are full, or the plenum is overloaded. Grease has nowhere else to go, so it runs down and drips, and condensation can carry it too. A canopy clean sorts it out.

What the work involves, part by part

Plenums and filter housings

Behind the grease filters is the plenum. It catches whatever gets past the filters, so it’s scraped and degreased on every canopy clean.

Grease troughs and gutters

Many canopies have troughs or gutters around the edge to catch running grease. They’re emptied and cleaned during the job, so they can do their job again.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

How we price canopy cleaning

The price is fixed before any work begins. It’s based on:

  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • The scale of the work
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why every job is surveyed first, and the price is agreed before work begins.

Asking for a quote

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Useful things to send:

  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • A few general shots of the system
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • The site address and the type of premises

Here’s what helps us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, photos of the system and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Once you have those, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

Signs you need canopy cleaning in Maryland

Most canopies have troughs or channels that catch running grease. Left to fill up, they spill over, so fat ends up running down the front of the hood.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • A filter housing caked in grease
  • A canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection
  • Smoke hanging around the canopy during service
  • Filters that clog soon after cleaning

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St John the Evangelist, or anywhere in Maryland, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

Questions to ask before booking

  • If they look at the system before pricing
  • How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
  • Whether VAT is included
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them

Maryland kitchens: local notes

According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 60 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 17 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Maryland. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Maryland is covered by London Fire Brigade. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. In Maryland, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Newham council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.

Historic houses near Maryland, such as Sutton House about 2.1 miles west, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes. A hospital like Queen Mary's Hospital for the East End, about under half a mile east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.
