How kitchen extract cleaning works in RG6
The ducts are where most of the grease hides. Access panels let us into the duct runs and risers, scraping heavy deposits by hand before degreasing. Any section we cannot reach is recorded on the report, and new panels can be fitted. The work covers horizontal duct runs, plenums and filters and vertical risers, and people most often call us about cleaning needed before an insurance renewal or survey and an extract that has never been cleaned to TR19.
We are used to working while the site is closed. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. The visit itself takes a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system.
- First comes a survey of the whole system, by photos or a visit.
- We measure the grease at set points along the system, then give you a fixed price.
- With the kitchen closed and equipment off and cool, the area is sheeted.
- We clean the canopy, plenum, filters, ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
- Readings and pictures are taken again, and you receive a TR19 certificate and photo report.
What affects the price in RG6
Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before any work starts.

Where we work in RG6
In RG6, a busy kitchen in a place such as Reading, Woodley and Earley and a quiet village kitchen need very different cleaning intervals. The right interval comes from hours of use and grease readings.
Across England, including RG6, the responsible person has a legal duty to assess and reduce fire risk, and a TR19® certificate and photo report give you a record of the work.
Reading: Volunteers running a hall kitchen near All Nations Christian Centre, or anywhere in Reading, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Royal Berkshire Hospital is the nearest hospital to Reading, about 0.8 miles east.
How we price kitchen extract cleaning
Your quote is based on your site. We consider:
- The number of sites or systems
- How easy every part is to reach
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- What state the system is in
Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.
What to send for a quote
To help us quote quickly, send us:
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- The postcode and the type of business
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
- Problems your staff have spotted
To get a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. We normally come back within one working day.
Why act early?
Grease that is left only gets thicker. Under BESA guidance, grease shouldn’t exceed a mean of 200 microns between cleans, and anywhere reaching 500 microns or more needs a spot clean right away. The longer it’s left, the bigger the job becomes.
Questions to ask before booking
- When the next visit should be, and why
- Whether the quote shows VAT
- When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours
- What paperwork you get at the end
Part by part
Ductwork and risers
Grease builds up most where the duct turns. We test at points like these before and after cleaning, so the report shows the difference.
Extract fan and discharge
Attenuators, where fitted, can soak up grease and need attention. Where they can be cleaned, they are, and the report notes anything that cannot.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.
Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.
When it’s something else
Before booking, it helps to know what’s not included:
- Fat blocking the kitchen drains
- Faulty fire dampers in the duct
- A broken extract fan that won’t run
RG6 questions
How much notice should we give?
Book as early as you can for planned work, especially if the next clean or test is due soon. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.
What does a TR19 kitchen extract clean include?
The whole system: canopy inside and out, plenum, grease filters, ductwork, risers, extract fan and discharge, plus attenuators where fitted. Anything we can’t reach is recorded on the report.
How long will the clean take?
Allow one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one. We’ll confirm the time when we quote.
What do you do to protect the area?
Floors and surfaces near the work are sheeted before any work starts, and anything we remove is contained. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.
Are you accredited for kitchen extract cleaning?
As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, our work sits within an independently audited scheme. We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 too, and we’re fully insured.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
Strictly, the legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, not from TR19. In practice, TR19 is how kitchens show they’re managing grease, and an insurer may refuse or reduce a claim without it.
Do you cover RG6?
Yes. Our technicians work in RG6, as part of our area across London and the South East.
