Kitchen extract cleaning across N21: what to expect
Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract systems since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers canopies and hoods, discharge points and vertical risers, and people most often call us about an inspection that picked up a dirty extract and cleaning needed before an insurance renewal or survey.
We turn up at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool before work begins, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one.
- First the diagnosis: a survey of the whole system and its access points.
- We record grease levels at set points, then fix the price.
- We arrive after close, protect the area and contain the waste.
- The treatment: heavy grease scraped out, then every part degreased to TR19® Grease.
- The sign-off: post-clean readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next clean date.
What affects the price in N21
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Ask for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.

How to get a quote
Getting a quote doesn’t take long. Send a few details and pictures, and we typically reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

Kitchen extracts across N21
Our kitchen extract cleaning work across N21 takes in places such as Enfield, Southgate and Enfield Chase and the villages in between. We cover every place we list for N21, 8 in all, and kitchens are cleaned around their opening hours, overnight and at weekends included.
London and the South East cover everything from city basements to rural kitchens. Wherever the site is in N21, the work is done to the same TR19® standard.
Winchmore Hill: If you run a café or takeaway near Winchmore Hill station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits. School kitchens, at schools like St. Paul's School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.
Leave it or put it right?
An overdue clean in N21 is best dealt with now rather than after the next inspection. The job takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system, and we fit around your opening hours. Waiting only adds grease and risk.
Questions to ask before you book
- Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
- When the next visit should be, and why
- What’s included in the scope, part by part
- How areas they can’t reach will be recorded
What staff can safely do
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.
A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That is our job.
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Greater London. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.
For anyone managing more than one site, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.
Signs you need kitchen extract cleaning
A kitchen in N21 builds up grease in the same places as any other: long horizontal runs, bends, the base of risers and around the fan. The cooler the duct, the more grease drops out of the air.
Common reasons sites call us include:
- Missing paperwork after a change of operator
- An inspection that picked up a dirty extract
- Ductwork thick with old, hardened grease
- Rancid smells from grease in the duct
Keeping the system healthy
To keep the system working properly between visits:
- Keep the extract on whenever the range is lit
- Never cook with filters missing or out of place
- Wipe the canopy down at the end of each day
- Flag any change in how the extract sounds or works
After cleaning, we re-test the same points we measured at the start, giving you before and after readings alongside the photos. A TR19 certificate follows, issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.
Regular filter cleaning is the simplest thing a kitchen can do. Clean, well-fitted filters catch more fat before it reaches the duct, which slows build-up further down the system.
N21 questions
Are you a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member?
Our work is to BESA TR19® Grease, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, and certificates go through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009.
Will the clean disrupt our service?
Cleans are timed to avoid service. Most kitchens book us overnight or at weekends, so you don’t lose a service.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, to suit the system and how it’s used.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
TR19® itself is not law. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19 is the recognised way to show you’ve dealt with extract grease.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes, any time. If something urgent happens, like a fan failing or damage after a fire, call our 24/7 line, and we’ll advise on what to do next.
What does TR19 mean?
BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
How much notice should we give?
That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.
