Kitchen extract cleaning across N8: what to expect
We treat an extract system much as a doctor treats a patient: diagnose with a survey, treat with a thorough clean, then sign it off. The sign-off is a TR19 certificate with a photo report, issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. The work covers plenums and filters, discharge points and canopies and hoods, and people most often call us about a kitchen with no current TR19 certificate and heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs.
The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. The middle part takes longest, which takes as long as the system needs, from a few hours to several planned visits.
- Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the system and how it’s reached.
- Grease readings set the baseline, and a fixed quote follows.
- After the kitchen closes, we sheet the area and set up to contain grease and water.
- The treatment: heavy grease scraped out, then every part degreased to TR19® Grease.
- Then the clean bill of health: readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next date.

Where we work in N8
From Noel Park, Wood Green and Crouch End to its smaller places, N8 has kitchens of every size. Every one gets the same full TR19® clean, from the canopy to the discharge.
N8 is within the area we cover, which takes in London and the South East. Every job is surveyed first and quoted at a fixed price.
Crouch End: Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Crouch End is Hornsey Central Hospital, about within half a mile north-west. If you run a café or takeaway near Crouch Hill station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits.
What affects the cost of kitchen extract cleaning
The diagnosis comes before the price. We look at:
- The condition we find in the survey
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
- Any permits to work or inductions
- Travel, parking and unloading
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why every job is surveyed first, and the price is agreed before any work starts.
Helping us quote
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:
- Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
- The site address and the type of premises
If you need kitchen extract cleaning in N8, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line. Tell us what kind of premises it is and when it’s open, plus pictures or the previous report if they’re to hand. We normally send a fixed quote within one working day.
When something else is needed
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- A fan motor that has burnt out
- Faulty fire dampers in the duct
- Blocked drains from a neglected grease trap (a separate service)
What happens if it’s left?
TR19® is not law, but the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is. The responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which in a kitchen includes the grease in the extract. Cleaning to TR19 is the recognised way to show you’ve done it.
Questions to ask before booking
- When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours
- How areas they can’t reach will be recorded
- What’s included in the scope, part by part
- Whether the quote is based on a survey or pictures
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
Different parts, different methods
Restaurant and pub kitchens
A pub or restaurant cannot afford to cancel a service for a clean. Overnight and weekend cleans keep the kitchen trading, and hand back a clean kitchen ready to cook.
Ductwork and risers
Long flat runs of duct are where grease collects. We open access panels along the route and clean each section, recording any that can’t be reached.
N8: your questions answered
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we’ll propose a schedule with a fixed quote.
What does a TR19 kitchen extract clean include?
All of it, from the canopy through to the discharge. Sections with no access are listed on the report, and extra panels can be fitted.
Do I have to clean my extract to TR19 by law?
TR19® itself isn’t law. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19 is the recognised way to show you’ve dealt with extract grease.
What should I send you?
Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, plus pictures of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.
When do you clean the extract?
Cleans are timed to avoid service. Overnight, weekend and between-service cleans are all possible and the kitchen is ready to cook when we leave.
What’s the right cleaning interval for a kitchen extract?
BESA guidance gives minimum intervals of 3, 6 or 12 months, depending on daily cooking hours. Kitchens that fry or grill a lot may need cleaning sooner, and readings will tell you.
What’s TR19?
A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark.
