When something else is needed

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment
  • Heavy deposits found on test, which still need cleaning
  • Ductwork that was designed or installed badly

If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll say what we think.

How we handle TR19 inspection in Crouch End

A pre-clean survey looks at the whole system, from canopy to discharge. Access is checked along the full length, and record grease readings at set points. If you’re dealing with sections of duct that can’t be reached and kitchens taken over with no cleaning records, we can help.

Kitchens in Crouch End, like many across London, can share a building with flats or offices, with the duct running up through shared risers. Grease in a duct like that is a fire risk to the whole building, not just the kitchen, so a regular TR19® clean protects everyone in it.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

How the job changes from site to site

Horizontal duct runs

Sections without access are recorded so panels can be added.

Canopy and plenum

Behind the filters, the plenum catches plenty of grease. We take readings there and photograph it on every inspection.

Common problems we fix in Crouch End

Some parts of a system are hard to reach, so those sections can be skipped time and again. A survey finds the sections that cannot be reached, so the gaps can be closed.

Most sites get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Insurers asking for TR19 evidence
  • Sites with gaps in their extract records
  • Kitchen extract systems with no recent grease readings
  • Ductwork where grease may be over the TR19 limits

For schools such as Rokesly Infant & Nursery School, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

Why act early in Crouch End

Catching heavy deposits early keeps the fix small. Ignored, the layer only gets thicker. Shared walls, risers and roofs mean a problem at one London site seldom stays put.

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

How we price TR19 inspection

A fixed price needs a few facts first. We check:

  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • The scale of the work
  • What state the system is in

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why every job is surveyed first, and the price is agreed before any work starts.

Helping us quote

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Useful things to send:

  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • Your last certificate, test record or report

Want a quote for TR19 inspection? Please phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with a few details about the site. We will explain what we’d do and send a fixed quote before anything is booked.

What we do, step by step

We are used to working while the site is closed. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes anything from an hour for a small canopy and short duct to a good part of a day for a large site. A name and number for whoever controls access to the building in Crouch End saves time on the night.

  1. We agree a time when the kitchen is closed or quiet.
  2. The system is checked from canopy to discharge.
  3. Grease thickness is measured at set points by WFTT or DTT.
  4. Photos are taken at each point, and access gaps noted.
  5. We send a report setting out the readings, photos and next steps.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas

Advice

Crouch End: your questions answered

Can parking be tricky for a job in Crouch End?

We plan it in advance, so let us know about loading bays, permits and access rules at the building. Working overnight, as we often do in London, typically makes it simpler.

Do you work at weekends in Crouch End?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. Your customers, staff or residents in Crouch End needn’t be disturbed. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, to suit the system and how it’s used.

What is a WFTT or DTT grease test?

Grease thickness testing measures the layer of grease on the duct surfaces, by WFTT or DTT. Each reading is recorded in microns.

What happens to the waste?

We take it away at the end of the visit. During the work, it’s contained so the area stays clean.

How much time does an inspection need?

It takes anything from an hour for a small canopy and short duct to a good part of a day for a large site. The visit is timed so cooking is not disrupted.

What do the grease readings need to be?

TR19® Grease says grease should not go over a mean of 200 microns between cleans. Any reading of 500 microns or more needs immediate spot cleaning.

What types of premises do you cover?

Commercial premises of every kind: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. Work is timed around how each site runs.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. Environmental health officers from Haringey council inspect food businesses in Crouch End. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. London jobs normally start after the last service, with loading and roof access agreed with the building first.
