Extract fan repair across Allhallows

Extract fan repair in Allhallows

Everything a kitchen extract does depends on the fan. When it starts to rattle, hum or slow down, the cooking area soon fills with heat and fumes. We find out why and put it right with a repair or a replacement. Common call-outs are for a fan shaking on its mountings and an extract fan that rattles or knocks, across roof and wall fans, fan motors and kitchen extract fans.

Somewhere as small as Allhallows, a kitchen extract fan might serve a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen. A failed fan stops the kitchen, and our 24/7 emergency line covers rural addresses too.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

The process

Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes a few hours on site, depending on the fault and the access to the fan. Seeing the system in pictures first means the trip to Allhallows can be planned properly.

  1. We ask what the fan is doing, from noise and vibration to a full stop.
  2. Power to the fan is isolated before we open the housing.
  3. The impeller, bearings, belts or drive, motor and mounts are all inspected.
  4. You hear what’s wrong and what it will cost, with a fixed quote, before we go ahead.
  5. Once the work is done, we run the fan and check it’s steady and quiet.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
  • Clear the space around the work

Common questions in Allhallows

What if my kitchen extract fan stops in Allhallows at night?

We run a 24/7 emergency line for failed extract fans, and Allhallows is part of our area. The number to ring is 0345 646 2711. If you can, stop cooking until the fan is checked.

Do you work overnight in Allhallows?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. That way a site in Allhallows doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

Not in itself. Insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19® as the benchmark, and many insurance policies ask for proof of TR19® cleaning. The legal duty sits in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which applies in England and Wales.

Can you repair a fan rather than replace it?

It depends on the fault. We diagnose first and tell you whether a repair is realistic, then send you a fixed quote.

What happens if you can’t reach some of it?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

What do you do with what you remove?

It leaves the site with us at the end of the visit. While we work, it’s kept contained so the area stays clean.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

The law calls them the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. If you’re not sure, check your lease and fire risk assessment.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. We always survey first, from your photos and details, or with a visit where necessary. Then you get a fixed quote.

Between visits

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:

  • Don’t cook with gaps in the filter bank
  • Save our number for the 24/7 emergency line
  • Make sure the fan is cleaned with the rest of the system
  • Do not turn the fan down to hide a noise

Grease on the fan normally means grease in the duct as well. A full TR19® clean deals with the canopy, ductwork and fan together, with a certificate and photo report.

Regular TR19 cleaning includes the extract fan. Keeping grease off the impeller is one of the simplest ways to protect it and that means less wear.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.

Signs you need extract fan repair in Allhallows

Not every problem is mechanical. A failed speed controller or a wiring fault can stop a fan, and a fan that won’t start isn’t always a dead motor.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • A belt-driven fan that squeals
  • Weak extraction and a smoky kitchen
  • A fan that keeps cutting out
  • A fan that whines, hums or grinds

Hall kitchens near Church of All Saints, or anywhere around Allhallows, often use their fans only now and then, and an idle fan can stick.

What happens if it’s left?

It can be tempting to turn the fan down to quieten it. It hides the symptom and weakens the extract while the underlying wear continues. A proper diagnosis in Allhallows gets to the real cause. Rural sites can’t always move to another kitchen or room when something fails.

Every site is different, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

What affects the quote in Allhallows

There’s no set price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:

  • The condition we find in the survey
  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • The times the site is available
  • Whether several sites go on one quote

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are not sure what’s needed, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email for straight advice and a fixed quote.

What to send for a quote

To help us quote quickly, please include:

  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall

For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. You’ll normally have a quote within one working day.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we can quote for the whole system.

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we’ll send a fixed quote.

What extract fan repair looks like in Allhallows

The coast is only about 1 mile from Allhallows. Near the sea, fans mounted outdoors corrode faster, and corroded fans tend to get noisy before they fail. There are about 4 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 4 takeaways within about 1.5 miles of central Allhallows, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Wherever they cook under a canopy, a failed extract fan stops the kitchen. Kitchens in Allhallows get their food hygiene inspections from Medway council. Food premises are expected to have suitable and sufficient ventilation under food hygiene rules. So a failed fan is worth fixing before the next service, not the next month.

Holidays are the time to replace a tired kitchen fan at schools such as Allhallows Primary Academy, rather than mid-term.
