About ductwork cleaning in Portsmouth
No two duct runs are the same, in Portsmouth or anywhere else. Some run a short distance to an outside wall, others climb several floors to the roof. The survey traces the route, so we know where to get in and how long it will take. We’re often asked to deal with a duct nobody has opened in years and hardened, baked-on grease in long horizontal runs, on vertical risers, access panels and multi-storey ducts.
There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers.
- We start by working out how the duct runs and where it can be opened.
- Set points along the runs are tested for grease.
- Through the access panels, thick grease is removed by hand first.
- Horizontal runs and risers are then degreased by the method that suits the deposit.
- Post-clean readings and photos go into the report, with any unreachable section listed.

Ductwork cleaning across Portsmouth: local notes
From Southsea, Milton and Landport to its smaller places, Portsmouth has kitchens of every size. Every one gets the same full TR19® clean, from the canopy to the discharge.
London and the South East cover everything from city basements to rural kitchens. The same TR19® standard applies to all of them, in Portsmouth and beyond. Coastal kitchens in Portsmouth often have their busiest months in the summer, so cleaning is often best booked before or after the peak season.
Portsmouth: Commuter trade near Fratton station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near St Wilfrid, or anywhere in Portsmouth, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.
For landlords and multi-site operators
If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
What staff can safely do
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.
When it’s something else
Not every problem is solved by ductwork cleaning, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not put right:
- A worn-out fan that needs replacing
- Ductwork that was poorly designed
- Duct sections that need replacing
Why deal with it now?
A dirty duct is something insurers ask about. Many require cleaning to TR19, and they can refuse or reduce a claim without proof. Your certificate and photo report show the ducts were cleaned.

Common problems we fix in Portsmouth
Ducts in Portsmouth gather grease for the same reasons as ducts anywhere: daily cooking hours, the menu and the state of the filters. Under BESA guidance, the minimum interval is 3, 6 or 12 months, by daily cooking hours.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Duct runs that can’t be reached
- Grease seeping out of the duct seams
- Years of grease along the duct floor
- A duct nobody has opened in years
Portsmouth: your questions answered
What do you do with what you remove?
Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, including grease, debris and dirty water. None of it is left on site.
Will I get a report after the ducts are cleaned?
When the duct is cleaned as part of a full TR19 clean, you get a TR19 certificate and a photo report. The report shows readings, photos and any sections we couldn’t reach.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes, of course. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we will propose a schedule with a fixed quote.
Are you fully insured?
Yes. We are fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.
What information do you need?
Only a few details: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and any previous paperwork make it quicker. After that, simply call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.
Do we have to stop cooking while the ducts are cleaned?
Out of hours, at a time that suits the kitchen. Larger systems may be cleaned over several nights, with the kitchen ready to cook each morning.
What happens if you can’t reach some of it?
Anything we can’t reach goes on the report, with photos where possible, and we explain what access is needed, such as extra access panels in ductwork.
