TR19 inspection in Portsmouth: how it works
Grease thickness testing tells you how much grease is sitting in the canopy, ducts and fan. We use the Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or the Deposit Thickness Test (DTT), taking readings at set points. From the numbers, you can see whether cleaning is due. The work covers deposit thickness tests, insurer audits and pre-clean surveys, and people most often call us about confirming a clean reached the whole system and sites with gaps in their extract records.
We are used to working while the site is closed. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes anything from an hour for a small canopy and short duct to a good part of a day for a large site.
- First we look at the system’s cleaning history, if there is one.
- The layout is traced from the canopy to the discharge.
- We note where access panels are and where more are needed.
- Grease readings are taken and photos recorded.
- You get a report and a fixed quote for the clean.

TR19 inspection across Portsmouth: local notes
Kitchens across Portsmouth cook for very different hours, from all-day town-centre sites to part-time hall and school kitchens. Grease readings and BESA’s minimum intervals set the schedule for each.
We work across London and the South East, and Portsmouth is part of that area. Each job starts with a survey and a fixed quote. Portsmouth includes coastal places, where salt in the air speeds up corrosion of roof-level equipment. Fans and cowls on sea-facing roofs are worth checking at every visit.
Portsmouth: If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Manor Infant School or anywhere near Portsmouth, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. If you cook for passing trade around Fratton station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer.
What your team can do, and what needs us
If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We’ll take a look and send you a fixed quote.
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Different parts, different methods
Vertical risers
Risers carry the extract up through the building. Grease can run down and collect at the base, so the base is a key test point.
Canopy and plenum
Filters can look fine while the plenum behind them is heavily coated. So we measure behind the filters, not just in front.
Honest limits
We won’t sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so here are the limits:
- Heavy deposits found on test, which still need cleaning
- A faulty or failing extract fan
- The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment
Multi-site and managed buildings
From a single site to a large estate, you get the same standard: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with photos.
Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
Why act early?
If a kitchen in Portsmouth has been cleaned on the same calendar for years, there’s no way to know if that interval is right without measuring. Testing gives you the evidence to set it properly.
What your quote should include
- If they look at the system before pricing
- Proof of insurance
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
- Whether they recommend a next date
Your questions about TR19 inspection in Portsmouth
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line, for problems that can’t wait. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.
Can one contract cover all our sites?
Yes. One number covers all your sites across London and the South East, with visits on a regular schedule.
Can you quote from photos?
In many cases, yes. With good pictures, the site type and your last report, we can price many jobs. Where we cannot see enough, we arrange a survey.
At what point does grease need cleaning?
Between cleans, the mean should stay at 200 microns or below, with 500 microns or more anywhere needing immediate spot cleaning.
What if parts of the system can’t be reached?
Anything we can’t reach goes on the report, with a note of where it is, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.
Are you accredited?
BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We’ve been trading since 2009 and we’re fully insured.
What do you need from me for a quote?
Just the basics: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and the last report help too. Then give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos.
