Ductwork cleaning in Fratton
Nobody sees duct grease building, so nobody notices it until something goes wrong. A flare-up drawn up from the range can light it, and fire can then run along the ductwork to other parts of the building. Cleaning the duct takes that fuel away. The work covers attenuators, vertical risers and bends and junctions, and the jobs we see most are duct runs that can’t be reached and readings above 200 microns from a grease thickness test.
Around a smaller place like Fratton, kitchen extracts tend to belong to pubs, cafés, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. Quieter kitchens still collect grease in the duct, just more slowly, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.
Each visit ends with a written report and pictures, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Looking after it afterwards
No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. Our tips:
- Never cook with a filter missing
- Consider fitting panels where the report shows gaps
- File each certificate and photo report in the maintenance log
- Have the grease measured if cooking hours go up
File the paperwork in the maintenance log. It’s the evidence an insurer or inspector may ask for, and the photos make the duct’s condition easy to see.
Watch for warning signs between cleans: drips from the ductwork, stale smells or a noisy fan. A grease thickness test can confirm whether a spot clean is needed.
What ductwork cleaning can’t fix
Ductwork cleaning cannot fix everything, and we will tell you before work begins. It will not put right:
- A duct that’s too small or badly routed for the kitchen (a design issue)
- Faulty fire dampers
- A worn-out fan that needs replacing
Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll tell you honestly.

Ductwork cleaning in Fratton: the local picture
Sea air reaches Fratton, which sits within about 2 miles of the coast. Corrosion on the fan housing and cowl is worth a look at every clean, alongside the grease. The FSA’s data shows about 97 pubs and bars and about 21 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses registered within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Fratton. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. The fire and rescue service for Fratton is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
For kitchens close to Fratton station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight. A hospital like St Mary's Hospital, about less than half a mile east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

How the job changes from site to site
Horizontal duct runs
Long horizontal runs need access panels at regular intervals. Any stretch out of reach is noted and can fit extra panels.
Bends and transitions
Wherever the duct turns or changes size, grease builds up. The air slows and drops its load, so we clean these points carefully.
What else we do in Fratton
Signs you need ductwork cleaning in Fratton
Wherever the kitchen is, in Fratton or elsewhere, the duct fills in the same way: daily cooking hours, the menu and the state of the filters. BESA guidance sets minimum intervals of 3, 6 or 12 months depending on daily use.
Keep an eye out for any of the following:
- A duct clean needed for an insurer
- Grease leaking from duct joints
- A duct nobody has opened in years
- A rancid smell from the extract duct
Church and community hall kitchens, near St Mary's Church or anywhere around Fratton, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

Leave it or put it right?
BESA guidance says grease shouldn’t exceed a mean of 200 microns between cleans. A reading of 500 microns or more at any point means a spot clean straight away. Putting off the clean only pushes readings higher. Systems on quieter sites still build up dirt and wear, just more slowly.
The cost depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and how easy it is to reach. We give you a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
If your staff spot something between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Fratton questions
Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Fratton?
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Fratton. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.
Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Fratton during the holidays?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Food Standards Agency records list about 49 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Fratton. You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us with the dates the site is empty.
What does TR19 mean?
BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.
What’s involved in cleaning extract ducts?
Each section is cleaned through its own panel. Heavy grease comes out by hand, and what’s left is degreased, with readings taken before and after.
Do you work with multi-site operators?
Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and you’ll get one fixed quote.
What happens if there aren’t enough access panels?
Every reachable section is cleaned and the rest recorded. Extra panels can be installed, and we can do that for you.
Are you accredited?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.
What information do you need?
Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, plus pictures of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.
How the visit works
We turn up at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes a shift or more, depending on the length of the runs and the number of access points. Evenings, weekends or a closed day all work for a site in a place like Fratton.
- First the duct route is traced and every access point noted.
- We measure grease thickness at set points before cleaning.
- We open the panels and scrape out the heaviest grease.
- Horizontal runs and risers are then degreased by the method that suits the deposit.
- Readings and photos are repeated and any section we couldn’t reach is recorded.
Getting ready for the visit
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
