How kitchen extract cleaning works in PO9
Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract systems since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 and are fully insured. The work covers canopies and hoods, vertical risers and horizontal duct runs, and people most often call us about an extract that has never been cleaned to TR19 and heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs.
We’re used to working while the site is closed. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one.
- Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the system and how it’s reached.
- We record grease levels at set points, then fix the price.
- We arrive after close, protect the area and contain the waste.
- Heavy deposits are scraped by hand and the system degreased to TR19® Grease.
- Then the clean bill of health: readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next date.
What you will pay
Combining work into one visit or one programme often makes better use of the time. Mention every system or site you need covered and we will price it together.

Getting a quote
Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and pictures, and we typically reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.
Landmarks near Havant
Typical jobs here are in premises near St Francis, Havant College and St Albans Church, among other places. Nearby too are Trosnant Infant School (less than half a mile south) and The Perseverance pub (0.7 miles south). The closest station to Havant is Havant station, roughly 0.6 miles south. A little further out are Havant War Memorial Hospital (0.6 miles south) and Havant Museum (0.9 miles south-east). Not far away are Southmoor Nature Reserve.
Kitchen extract cleaning around PO9
Kitchens across PO9 cook for very different hours, from all-day town-centre sites to part-time hall and school kitchens. The right interval comes from hours of use and grease readings.
In England, the Fire Safety Order puts the duty on the responsible person to assess and reduce fire risk, and each certificate and photo report is a record you can keep in your log book. In the coastal parts of PO9, salt air and damp are hard on ductwork, fans and dampers, which is worth knowing when systems are inspected.
Havant: If you run a café or takeaway near Havant station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Havant War Memorial Hospital about 0.6 miles south, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.
Different parts, different methods
Canopy and plenum
Behind the grease filters sits the plenum, which daily cleaning never reaches. We take the filters out and clean the plenum and housing thoroughly.
Restaurant and pub kitchens
Restaurants and pubs tend to cook long hours with plenty of frying and grilling, which can put them in BESA’s 3 or 6-monthly bands. Cleans are done after close, overnight or before opening.
Between visits
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Refit filters properly after cleaning
- Keep the baffle filters clean
- Empty any grease troughs or cups on the canopy
- Keep to the recommended cleaning interval
After cleaning, we re-test the same points we measured at the start, so you can see the difference in numbers as well as photos. A TR19 certificate follows, issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.
Book the next clean before the last one runs out. BESA guidance links the minimum interval to daily cooking hours, so a change in hours may mean a change in interval, and grease readings will show it.
Fixed quotes for kitchen extract cleaning in PO9
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- The condition we find in the survey
- Whether several sites go on one quote
- How big the system is
We don’t list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email, and we will explain what it covers.
Helping us quote
Photos let us diagnose from a distance. Try to include:
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
For kitchen extract cleaning in PO9, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email. Tell us what kind of premises it is and when it’s open, plus photos or the previous report if they’re to hand. A fixed quote normally follows within one working day.
What happens if it’s left?
Grease that’s left only gets thicker. Under BESA guidance, grease shouldn’t exceed a mean of 200 microns between cleans, and 500 microns or more at any point needs immediate spot cleaning. The longer it’s left, the bigger the job becomes.
Comparing quotes
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- Proof of insurance
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
- When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours
Why it fails
Grease in the extract matters because it burns. A flare-up on the range can be drawn up into the canopy and duct, where burning grease can carry a fire along the ducts and into other parts of the building. That is why controlling extract grease belongs in the fire risk assessment.
Any of these means the system needs a check-up:
- An extract that has never been cleaned to TR19
- Rancid smells from grease in the duct
- Ductwork thick with old, hardened grease
- A smoky, hot kitchen with weak extraction
PO9 questions
Do you look at the system first?
Yes. We always survey first, from your photos and details, or with a visit where needed. A fixed quote follows.
Can you quote from photos?
Yes, where the photos show enough. Otherwise, we book a survey at a time that suits the site, then a fixed quote.
What happens to the waste?
We contain it and take it with us. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on, so it does not spread.
How far ahead should we book?
That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.
Will my insurer ask for a TR19 certificate?
Extract grease is fuel for a kitchen fire, so many insurers want evidence it’s being cleaned to TR19. Each clean gives you a certificate and photo report to show them.
When do you clean the extract?
Cleans are timed to avoid service. Most kitchens book us overnight or at weekends and the kitchen is ready to cook when we leave.
What accreditations do you hold?
Our work is to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, and certificates go through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009.
