Canopy cleaning near Hackney

Keeping the system healthy

Simple habits between visits make a real difference. Our advice:

  • Don’t scrape the canopy with metal tools
  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
  • Never run the range with a filter out
  • Give the canopy a wipe after service

We point out anything we noticed while the canopy was apart: damaged filters, gaps around the housing or troughs that need emptying more often. It’s a short list of what to watch, not a sales pitch.

A change in how the canopy behaves is worth reporting. More drips or quicker clogging often mean the cleaning interval needs looking at, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Hackney

If the canopy in Hackney is dripping, sticky or overdue a clean? Send us a photo of the hood and filters when you phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email, and we will send you a fixed quote for canopy cleaning, normally within one working day. If you have smoke hanging around the canopy during service and a plenum thick with grease behind the filters, we can put it right, from plenum chambers, wall canopies and canopy light fittings onwards.

In a London area like Hackney, a kitchen extract often passes through shared space on its way out: a riser, a service void, the floors above. A duct fire there can reach parts of the building far from the range, which is why keeping it clean to TR19® matters.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

How it works

We are used to working while the site is closed. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes a few hours for most canopies. Before any visit in Hackney, we agree where the van can stop and how equipment reaches the system.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
  2. The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
  3. We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down

Advice

For landlords and multi-site operators

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we will come back with a fixed quote.

Kitchen extracts in Hackney

Look up Hackney on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you’ll find about 679 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 179 sandwich bars and takeaways in and around Hackney, up to about a mile and a half out. Wherever there’s a canopy over the cooking, its hood and plenum collect grease with every service. In Hackney, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Hackney council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Hackney is covered by London Fire Brigade. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

Term dates shape school work: for a school like Berger Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Homerton University Hospital is the nearest hospital to Hackney, about within half a mile north. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Luke, or anywhere in Hackney, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

Hackney is about 4 miles north-east of London, in Greater London. Hackney gets the same approach as every site we work on: a survey first, a fixed quote, work timed around your hours and a report with pictures. What a clean will not put right

A few issues sit outside what this work can do:

  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • A light fitting that does not work
  • A canopy undersized for the equipment

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll say what we think.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Plenum chambers
  • Grease gutters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Wall canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Island canopies

How we price canopy cleaning

The price is fixed before any work begins. It takes into account:

  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • The size of the system

No two sites are the same, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all play a part.

What to send for a quote

When you call or email, these details help:

  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks

Quotes are quick. Send a few details and photos, and we normally reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

Common questions in Hackney

Which fire service covers Hackney?

It’s London Fire Brigade, which covers Hackney. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Does London parking affect a job in Hackney?

Tell us where a van can stop near your site in Hackney, and about any building rules on loading. Working overnight, as we often do in London, typically makes it simpler.

What causes grease to drip from the hood?

Full gutters and a heavily coated plenum are the common causes. Grease has nowhere else to go, so it runs down and drips, and condensation can carry it too. A canopy clean sorts it out.

Is TR19 cleaning required by law?

No. The law sets the duty, and TR19® is the recognised benchmark for meeting it. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has to manage fire risk, and many insurers can refuse or reduce a claim without proof of cleaning.

What types of premises do you cover?

Any commercial site with kitchens or ventilation, from a small pub to a hospital. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.

Do you work in Hackney?

Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of South East England, and that includes Hackney.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

The law calls them the responsible person. That is generally the employer or the person in control of the premises, and where several people have control, each can have duties. If you are not sure, check your lease and fire risk assessment.

What does TR19 mean?

BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.

Why deal with it now?

Leaving the canopy until the next full clean can mean months of build-up. In a busy kitchen, the canopy and plenum can need attention between TR19 cleans, and readings or a look behind the filters will show it. A busy site in Hackney builds up dirt and wear quickly, so putting it off makes the eventual job larger.

Several systems or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we will price it together.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
