TR19 inspection near Kenton

TR19 inspection in Kenton: the local picture

Food Standards Agency records include about 24 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 4 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses within about 1.5 miles of central Kenton. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Fire safety in Kenton falls to London Fire Brigade. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Environmental health officers from Harrow council inspect food businesses in Kenton. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; St. Mark's Hospital is the nearest hospital to Kenton, about 0.9 miles south-west. Bursars and site managers at schools such as St Gregory's Catholic Science College tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of St Mary or elsewhere in Kenton, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

TR19 inspection in Kenton, done properly

A pre-clean survey is the diagnosis, and the clean is the treatment. Readings, pictures and notes on access are gathered from end to end, so the quote and the clean fit the real system. Typical jobs include heavy grease suspected in the plenum or ducts and sites with gaps in their extract records, on wet film thickness tests, pre-clean surveys and deposit thickness tests.

Across London, many commercial kitchens are squeezed into basements and narrow back-of-house spaces, and the duct may run up through several floors before it discharges at the roof. In Kenton, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with photos, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

Kenton questions

How do you handle parking and loading in Kenton?

A loading bay, a visitor permit or off-street space near the site in Kenton makes the visit easier to plan. If the building has a loading slot system, we’ll book into it.

Can the work in Kenton be done at night or at weekends?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. The site is handed back ready to open. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

How often should grease be tested?

It depends on how heavily the kitchen cooks. BESA sets minimum cleaning intervals of 3, 6 or 12 months by daily use, and grease readings help set the real interval.

Why survey before a clean?

It’s a look at the whole extract before it’s cleaned, with readings and photos. We can work from pictures and details, or visit, as suits the job.

At what point does grease need cleaning?

TR19® Grease says grease should not go over a mean of 200 microns between cleans. Any reading of 500 microns or more needs immediate spot cleaning.

What if parts of the system can’t be reached?

Anything we can’t reach goes on the report, with a note of where it is, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.

Is Kenton in your area?

Yes. Kenton is part of the area we cover, within the South East and London area we cover.

What is grease thickness testing?

It’s a measurement of how much grease is coating the inside of the extract, by WFTT or DTT. The results are given in microns.

Why deal with it now?

Surveying first means the clean goes to plan. Access problems are spotted in advance rather than on the night, so the clean covers the whole system. Shared walls, risers and roofs mean a problem at one London site seldom stays put.

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re not sure what’s needed, call 0345 646 2711 or email us for straight advice and a fixed quote.

What happens on the day

We turn up at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. Many London buildings have a managing agent, a security desk or a permit-to-work system, so tell us who to contact in Kenton.

  1. After the clean, we arrange a time to check the system.
  2. The same access points are opened up.
  3. Grease readings are taken again at set points.
  4. We photograph each area to record how it was left.
  5. We report the findings and flag any areas that need more work.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Find the previous report, if there is one

Advice

What the work involves, part by part

Vertical risers

Access to risers is often limited. The survey shows exactly what access there is.

Restaurants, pubs and hotels

A kitchen running from breakfast to late service builds grease quickly. Regular testing shows whether the cleaning interval keeps up.

When it’s something else

TR19 inspection can’t fix everything, and we’ll tell you before we start. It does not solve:

  • Installation problems, which fall under design guidance such as DW172
  • Fan breakdowns, which need a repair visit
  • Sections with no access, until panels are fitted

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will say what we think before you book.

Multi-site and managed buildings

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept on a regular cycle.

Keeping the system healthy

Aftercare is simple, and it helps at the next visit:

  • Keep canopy edges and gutters wiped down
  • Tell us if menus or opening hours change
  • Keep TR19 certificates, readings and reports together
  • Clean or swap grease filters as often as the kitchen needs

Keep the verification report next to the certificate it relates to. Together they show the system was cleaned and checked.

Clean, correctly fitted filters stop more grease reaching the duct. Gaps around filters let grease get past them.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.
