TR19 inspection across Shoreditch

TR19 inspection in Shoreditch, done properly

Not every kitchen fits neatly into a calendar. Some kitchens build up grease faster than the minimum intervals assume, and only measurement shows it. We give your risk assessment measured figures rather than guesses. If you’re dealing with parts of the system left out of past cleans and kitchens taken over with no cleaning records, we can put it right, from deposit thickness tests, pre-clean surveys and access surveys onwards.

London kitchens are often tucked into basements or the back of a building, with extract ducts that can climb several floors to discharge at roof level. For a kitchen in Shoreditch, that usually means a longer system to clean and more access panels to plan around.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

Shoreditch questions

Who is the fire and rescue service for Shoreditch?

London Fire Brigade is the fire and rescue service for Shoreditch. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.

Can school kitchens in Shoreditch be cleaned in the holidays?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. The FSA’s register shows about 80 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Shoreditch. Tell us your holiday dates and we will book the visit for when the site is empty.

What does TR19 inspection cost?

It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. To get one, call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us about the site and its opening hours.

How much notice should we give?

The more notice, the better, particularly for night and weekend visits. Quotes usually come back within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.

What is post-clean verification?

It’s an inspection after cleaning, to show what state the system was left in, whoever did the clean.

What does TR19 mean?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked and expects a risk-based approach.

What is a WFTT or DTT grease test?

WFTT and DTT are the two methods for measuring grease thickness, in microns. Readings are taken at set points through the system.

Do you work out of hours?

Yes, and it’s often the best time. The visit is timed for when the area is not in use, such as late evening, overnight or a weekend.

Kitchen extracts in Shoreditch

The FSA’s data shows about 411 pubs and bars and about 62 hotels and guest houses registered within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Shoreditch. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. Night work suits London kitchens, and roads and loading bays tend to be quieter too. Environmental health officers from Hackney council inspect food businesses in Shoreditch. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; St Luke's Hospital for Lunatics is the nearest hospital to Shoreditch, about 0.5 miles west. Term dates shape school work: for a school like Virginia Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

Keeping the system healthy

Once we’ve finished, these simple steps help:

  • Keep TR19 certificates, readings and reports together
  • Keep grease filters clean and fitted properly
  • Book the next test on the date in the report
  • Have the latest report ready for insurance renewals

You get a report with the grease readings, where they were taken and pictures of each point. File it alongside your TR19 certificates.

Keep filters clean and in place. Missing or damaged filters let grease straight into the plenum.

Leave it or put it right?

If there’s a fire or a claim, your insurer may ask for TR19 records. Without them, a claim can be reduced or refused. An up-to-date inspection report is a good place to start. Every month a London system goes without attention adds to what has to be done later.

The cost depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

Signs you need TR19 inspection in Shoreditch

As hot, greasy air travels up the duct, it cools and leaves a film behind. The thickest layers can sit out of sight in the plenum, at bends and along flat runs.

Clients usually contact us after spotting one of these:

  • Insurers asking for TR19 evidence
  • Cleaning intervals that may not suit the kitchen
  • Systems that need surveying before cleaning
  • Sections of duct that cannot be reached

Church and community hall kitchens, near St Leonard's Church or anywhere around Shoreditch, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

What to look for in a quote

  • What hours they’ll be on site
  • How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
  • Whether they recommend a next date
  • Whether they’re fully insured

What TR19 inspection cannot fix

Not every problem is solved by TR19 inspection, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t put right:

  • The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment
  • Ductwork that was designed or installed badly
  • Mechanical faults in the extract

If you are not sure, just call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will give you a straight answer.

How the visit works

Everything the job needs comes with us, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. All we need from you is clear access and the right equipment switched off. The visit takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. A name and number for whoever controls access to the building in Shoreditch saves time on the night.

  1. We go through any past certificates and reports.
  2. The layout is traced from the canopy to the discharge.
  3. We note where access panels are and where more are needed.
  4. We measure the grease and photograph each point.
  5. We report back with readings and a fixed quote.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Clear the space around the work

Part by part

Vertical risers

Vertical risers take the extract up through the floors. Grease can run down and collect at the base, so the base is a key test point.

Restaurants, pubs and hotels

Heavy use under BESA guidance, 12 to 16 hours a day, means a clean at least every 3 months, and readings show whether that’s enough.

For landlords and multi-site operators

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we will come back with a fixed quote.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.
