How kitchen extract cleaning works in HA1
Across HA1, we clean kitchen extract systems to BESA TR19® Grease. The job starts with a survey and grease readings, then works through canopy, plenum, filters, ductwork, fan and discharge. At the finish there’s a TR19 certificate and a before and after photo report. Typical jobs include an extract that has never been cleaned to TR19 and grease drips onto cooking equipment, on discharge points, plenums and filters and horizontal duct runs.
Every visit runs to the same pattern: sheeting and protection first, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the kitchen extract cleaning, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system.
- First the diagnosis: a survey of the whole system and its access points.
- We record grease levels at set points, then fix the price.
- After the kitchen closes, we sheet the area and set up to contain grease and water.
- The treatment: heavy grease scraped out, then every part degreased to TR19® Grease.
- The sign-off: post-clean readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next clean date.
What you’ll pay
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you are not sure what’s needed, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your pictures and details or, where that is not enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price, before any work starts.
Near you in Greenhill
Around Greenhill, our work takes us to kitchens and buildings near Northwick Park, Royal Oak pub and Harrow High School. Nearby too are Church of St John the Baptist (under half a mile south-east) and Saint Jerome Church of England Bilingual School (under half a mile north-east). There’s a railway station in Greenhill itself: Harrow-on-the-Hill station. Well-known places in the area include St. Anns (less than half a mile south-west) and Hilfield Castle (4.8 miles north). Kitchen extract cleaning around HA1
In HA1, a busy kitchen in a place such as Harrow, Wembley and Kenton and a quiet village kitchen need very different cleaning intervals. The right interval comes from hours of use and grease readings.
In England, the Fire Safety Order puts the duty on the responsible person to assess and reduce fire risk, and each certificate and photo report is a record you can keep in your log book.
Greenhill: Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St John the Baptist, or anywhere in Greenhill, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. If you run a café or takeaway near Harrow-on-the-Hill station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits.
Why it fails
The type of cooking changes the amount of grease. Fryers, grills and open flames throw much more fat into the extract than gentler cooking, so two kitchens with the same hours can need very different intervals.
Most sites get in touch when they notice one of these:
- A TR19 certificate needed for the insurer
- Rancid smells from grease in the duct
- An extract that no longer clears the smoke
- Heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs
Part by part
Schools, hospitals and care homes
School, hospital and care home kitchens often have fixed hours and long holidays, so cleans can be planned for holidays or quiet times. The certificate goes straight into the site’s maintenance records.
Grease filters
Filters need cleaning far more often than the duct and we offer a filter exchange service for that. Clean filters slow the build-up further down the system.
What happens if it’s left?
If there’s a fire and the extract hasn’t been cleaned, the paperwork becomes the problem. Many insurers ask for proof of TR19 cleaning and may reduce or refuse a claim without it. A current certificate is far easier to produce than an explanation.
Comparing quotes
- How VAT is shown on the quote
- Whether a written report and photos are included
- Whether they recommend a next date
- What hours they’ll be on site
What affects the cost of kitchen extract cleaning
Your quote is based on your site. We consider:
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- The number of sites or systems
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- What state the system is in
What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and the price is agreed before we start.
What we need to know
Before you ask for a quote, gather:
- Problems your staff have spotted
- Any previous report or certificate
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.
When it’s something else
We won’t sell you work that does not address the problem, so these are the things it won’t cover:
- Damaged duct sections that need replacing
- A fan motor or bearings that have failed (that needs a fan repair or replacement)
- A grease trap that needs emptying
HA1: your questions answered
What happens if you cannot reach some of it?
They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. You will know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.
What do I get after the clean?
A TR19 certificate, plus a full photo report. It records what was cleaned, what wasn’t accessible and the recommended next clean date.
What does TR19 mean?
BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for anything that cannot wait until a planned visit. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.
Are you accredited for kitchen extract cleaning?
We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 sit alongside that, and we are fully insured.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes, every time. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.
How long will the clean take?
That depends on the size of the system, the amount of grease and the number of access points. As a guide, it takes a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system.
