How it works

Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems. In East Ham, as across London, we normally work overnight or at weekends and hand the site back ready to open.

  1. First we look at the system’s cleaning history, if there is one.
  2. We follow the extract from canopy to discharge.
  3. We note where access panels are and where more are needed.
  4. We measure the grease and photograph each point.
  5. We report back with readings and a fixed quote.

Preparing for the visit

  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
  • Clear the space around the work

About our TR19 inspection in East Ham

Before any clean in East Ham, we survey the canopy, plenum, filters, ducts, fan and discharge. We check where the access panels are and whether every section can be reached, and record grease readings at set points. Common call-outs are for missing TR19 certificates or history and ductwork where grease may be over the TR19 limits, across access surveys, insurer audits and pre-clean surveys.

Kitchens in East Ham, like many across London, can share a building with flats or offices, with the duct running up through shared risers. Grease in a duct like that is a fire risk to the whole building, not just the kitchen, so a regular TR19® clean protects everyone in it.

A written report with pictures follows every visit, so there’s a dated record of the work. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Questions from East Ham

Can you clean school kitchen extracts in East Ham during the holidays?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. The FSA’s register shows about 60 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of East Ham. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.

Can the work in East Ham be done at night or at weekends?

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. The work in East Ham can fit around your hours. Just phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.

What is a WFTT or DTT grease test?

WFTT and DTT are the two methods for measuring grease thickness, in microns. We take readings at set points from canopy to fan.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

Commercial premises of every kind: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. Work is timed around how each site runs.

Which accreditations do you hold?

We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

Protection goes down first: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

Do you carry out TR19 audits for insurers?

Yes. Our TR19 audits cover readings, photos, access and a recommended cleaning interval. It’s set out for your insurer or broker.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes, any time. If something urgent happens, like a fan failing or damage after a fire, call our 24/7 line and we will talk you through the next steps.

Grease, kitchens and East Ham

There are about 293 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 242 takeaways and sandwich shops across East Ham and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half), according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. A WFTT or DTT reading tells each of those kitchens whether its grease is staying under the 200-micron mean. London Fire Brigade covers East Ham. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. It’s Newham council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in East Ham. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Newham University Hospital is the nearest hospital to East Ham, about 1 mile south-west. Bursars and site managers at schools such as St Michael's Catholic Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. Eastbury Manor House, about 1.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses near East Ham; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions.

East Ham is about 5 miles south-east of Walthamstow, in Greater London. Whatever kind of site you run in East Ham, we can take on TR19 inspection. Different parts, different methods

Horizontal duct runs

Grease settles on the floor of horizontal ducts as the air cools. We test at points along the run through access panels.

Restaurants, pubs and hotels

We test between services, early in the morning or after close so the kitchen keeps cooking.

What affects the cost of TR19 inspection

You’ll get a fixed price before we start. It takes into account:

  • How easy every part is to reach
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • The condition of the system
  • The number of sites or systems

Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before any work starts.

Helping us quote

Photos let us diagnose from a distance. Try to include:

  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles

If you need TR19 inspection in East Ham, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email. Tell us what kind of premises it is and when it’s open, and send pictures or your last report if you can. We usually send a fixed quote within one working day.

Aftercare tips

How long the results last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Book the next test on the date in the report
  • Never cook with filters missing
  • Look out for grease drips round the canopy edge
  • Wipe the canopy surfaces regularly

If any reading is 500 microns or more, the report flags it for immediate spot cleaning, and we can quote to do it.

Test grease regularly instead of relying on the calendar. It spots changes in how fast grease builds.

For landlords and multi-site operators

For anyone managing more than one site, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.

What TR19 inspection can’t fix

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment
  • Design faults in the extract system
  • Hidden runs that need access panels first

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will say what we think before you book.
