Canopy cleaning in East Ham

Canopy cleaning in East Ham

We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you’re dealing with fat running down the front of the hood and filters that never seem to stay clean, we can help.

London kitchens are often tucked into basements or the back of a building, with extract ducts that can climb several floors to discharge at roof level. In East Ham, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.

A written report with photos follows each visit, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Questions from East Ham

Which fire authority looks after East Ham?

That is London Fire Brigade. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.

Which council inspects kitchens in East Ham?

Food hygiene inspections in East Ham are carried out by Newham council. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.

Which accreditations do you hold?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We have been trading since 2009 and we’re fully insured.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. For many sites, photos and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

What about areas you can’t get to?

Anything we can’t reach goes on the report, with a note of where it is, and we tell you what would make it reachable, such as extra access panels in ductwork.

Is canopy cleaning enough for TR19?

You can have the canopy cleaned on its own, but it will not cover the ductwork or fan. TR19 Grease covers everything the grease travels through, at intervals set by BESA guidance.

What is TR19?

A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

We start with protection: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. We tidy up and take our waste away before we leave.

What the work involves, part by part

Wall canopies

Long wall canopies often have several filter banks. We work along the canopy section by section, with photos for each.

Pub and hotel kitchens

Pub and hotel kitchens can cook from breakfast to late evening. That’s a lot of grease on the canopy, and canopy cleans between full cleans can help.

How it works

There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. In a London area like East Ham, parking, loading and building access are planned before the day of the work.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

How to prepare

  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Find the previous report, if there is one

Multi-site and managed buildings

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Greater London. Larger estates can be phased building by building around the people who use them.

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we can quote for the whole system.

What we are called out for in East Ham

The canopy takes the hottest, wettest air in the kitchen. Grease from the vapour lands on the canopy’s inner surfaces, its joints and its filters, and the plenum behind them collects the rest.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Greasy streaks across the canopy
  • Filters that never seem to stay clean
  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge
  • Grease channels that no longer drain

For schools such as St Michael's Catholic Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is usually booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

What your quote should include

  • Exactly which parts of the system are covered
  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or pictures
  • How they set the interval to the next visit

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

Leave it or put it right?

Baked-on grease gets harder to shift the longer it stays. Over months, the heat hardens it into a stubborn coating, so the longer it’s left, the longer the clean takes. A busy site in East Ham builds up dirt and wear quickly, so putting it off makes the eventual job larger.

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before we start.

Why choose Duct Doctor in East Ham

Looking after it afterwards

Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Keep every filter in place while cooking
  • Wipe the canopy down at close every day
  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy
  • Clean the baffle filters often

File the report alongside your fire risk assessment where an inspector can see it. Before and after pictures speak for themselves.

Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

Grease, kitchens and East Ham

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 18 pubs, bars and clubs and about 9 hotels and B&Bs within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of East Ham. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Overnight is the normal time to clean a London kitchen extract, so trading isn’t affected. Fire safety in East Ham falls to London Fire Brigade. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

Eastbury Manor House, about 1.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses near East Ham; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Newham University Hospital (about 1 mile south-west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.
