About TR19 inspection in Reading

A pre-clean survey is the diagnosis, and the clean is the treatment. We look at the system, take grease readings and photograph what we find, so the clean can be planned properly. The work covers access surveys, post-clean checks and insurer audits, and the jobs we see most are checking the result of a recent clean and missing access panels found on survey.

Your trading hours come first. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the job takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems.

  1. First we look at the system’s cleaning history, if there is one.
  2. The layout is traced from the canopy to the discharge.
  3. Access panels are located and any missing ones noted.
  4. We measure the grease and photograph each point.
  5. You get a report and a fixed quote for the clean.

What you will pay

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why every job is surveyed first, and the price is agreed before any work starts.

Getting a quote doesn’t take long. Call or email with a few details and you will usually have a fixed price within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

Around Caversham

Typical jobs here are in premises near Eldon Square, Highdown School and Sixth Form Centre and Chiltern Nursery Nurse Training School. Other local landmarks include The Hill Primary School (within half a mile north-east), Grace Church (under half a mile east) and The White Horse pub (within half a mile north). The nearest railway station is Reading station, about 1.3 miles south of the centre. Nearby you’ll also find Royal Berkshire Hospital (1.9 miles south) and Broad Street Mall (1.6 miles south). The countryside around Caversham includes South Lake and Sonning Hill.

Kitchen extracts across Reading

In Reading, a busy kitchen in a place such as Caversham, Norcot and West Reading and a quiet village kitchen need very different cleaning intervals. Grease readings and BESA’s minimum intervals set the schedule for each.

Across London and the South East, we work evenings, overnight and weekends, so sites in Reading can keep trading.

Caversham: Term dates shape school work: for a school like The Hill Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Caversham (Mapledurham House is about 3 miles west), fitting access panels needs care.

Honest limits

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what TR19 inspection will not do:

  • Removing the grease, which is a separate clean
  • Mechanical faults in the extract
  • Hidden runs that need access panels first

Why it fails

As hot, greasy air travels up the duct, it cools and leaves a film behind. The thickest layers can sit out of sight in the plenum, at bends and along flat runs.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Surveys needed before quoting a full clean
  • Kitchens taken over with no cleaning records
  • An insurer’s request for a TR19 audit
  • Kitchens whose menu or hours have changed

Fixed quotes for TR19 inspection in Reading

There’s no set price list, because sites vary so much. The quote depends on:

  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • How big the system is

We do not list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll talk you through it.

Asking for a quote

A few details help us quote accurately. With your enquiry, please include:

  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • A few general shots of the system
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet

We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, and then send you a fixed quote. To start, call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos.

What staff can safely do

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.

What the work involves, part by part

Vertical risers

Risers can be hard to get into. We record what can and can’t be reached.

Extract fan and discharge

A greasy fan works harder and wears faster. Readings show if it needs attention before the next clean.

Reading: your questions answered

What is TR19?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and we’ll quote them together.

Are you accredited?

Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes, always. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it and the fixed quote is built on it.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. It’s the benchmark rather than the law. Without TR19 records, an insurance claim can be reduced or refused, so it matters in practice.

Can you quote from pictures?

Yes, where the pictures show enough. If not, a site survey comes first, then a fixed quote.

Do you work out of hours?

Yes. Much of our work happens in the evening, overnight or at weekends, so the site does not lose a service.
