How kitchen extract cleaning works in NW7

Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract systems since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Common call-outs are for cleaning needed before an insurance renewal or survey and stale cooking odours from the system, across discharge points, canopies and hoods and horizontal duct runs.

Everything the job needs comes with us, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. All we need from you is clear access and the right equipment switched off. On site, the work takes a single shift for most kitchens, with long duct runs and tall risers needing more time.

  1. You send photos or we visit, and the system is surveyed from canopy to discharge.
  2. Grease thickness is measured and the price is fixed before work starts.
  3. The kitchen is closed, the equipment cooled and everything nearby protected.
  4. Filters, canopy and plenum are cleaned, then the ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
  5. We re-test, photograph and send your certificate and photo report.

What you’ll pay

We don’t list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.

For rail, the closest station is Mill Hill Broadway station, about 1 mile south-west of the centre. Kitchen extracts across NW7

Kitchens across NW7 cook for very different hours, from all-day town-centre sites to part-time hall and school kitchens. The right interval comes from hours of use and grease readings.

Much of our work across London and the South East happens in the evening, overnight or at weekends, so sites across NW7 do not have to lose a day.

Mill Hill: If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Edgware Community Hospital about 2 miles south-west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St Paul's Church or elsewhere in Mill Hill, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so each one has its own record.

Leave it or put it right?

Leaving the clean until the next refit does not make the grease go away. Fat that was soft and easy to remove hardens with heat and time, and that takes more work to shift. Regular cleans keep each visit shorter.

What your quote should include

  • What paperwork you get at the end
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or pictures
  • Whether the figure could change on the day

Aftercare tips

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:

  • Keep the baffle filters clean
  • Keep the extract on whenever the range is lit
  • Tell us when the extract starts to drip or smell
  • File each certificate with the fire risk assessment

If we couldn’t get into part of the duct, the report says so plainly. That’s part of an honest TR19 clean, not a failing, and we can fit access panels so it’s reached next time.

Wipe the canopy down regularly and empty grease troughs or collection points. It won’t replace a TR19 clean, but it slows what reaches the duct.

What we are called out for in NW7

We often find duct sections that haven’t been cleaned since they were installed. Most of the time it’s because there were never enough access panels, so those sections were never reached. Grease in those sections keeps building out of sight.

It’s time to book a visit if you see:

  • Proof of cleaning requested by an insurer
  • Heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs
  • Grease smells coming from the extract
  • Grease dripping from the canopy or filters

NW7 questions

What does TR19 mean?

BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.

Will the clean disrupt our service?

Out of hours: evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. The equipment is switched off and left to cool, and we hand the kitchen back ready for the next service.

How much notice should we give?

It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, to suit the system and how it’s used.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. One number covers all your sites across London and the South East, with visits on a regular schedule.

What should I send you?

Some photos and a quick description of the system, with the address and opening hours. If we need more, we’ll ask.

Is a quote from photos possible?

Often, yes. With good pictures, the site type and your last report, we can price many jobs. Larger or hidden systems need a survey on site first.
