Kitchen extract cleaning in IG1

How kitchen extract cleaning works in IG1

The part of the system nobody sees is often the dirtiest. Access panels let us into the duct runs and risers, scraping heavy deposits by hand before degreasing. Anything out of reach is noted in the report and extra access panels can be added. The work covers extract fans, vertical risers and canopies and hoods, and common reasons people get in touch are an overdue clean flagged by an EHO or fire officer and a TR19 certificate needed for the insurer.

When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the pictures you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, it takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system.

  1. First the diagnosis: a survey of the whole system and its access points.
  2. Grease readings set the baseline, and a fixed quote follows.
  3. We arrive after close, protect the area and contain the waste.
  4. The treatment: heavy grease scraped out, then every part degreased to TR19® Grease.
  5. Then the clean bill of health: readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next date.

Kitchen extracts across IG1

In IG1, a busy kitchen in a place such as Ilford, Loxford and Manor Park and a quiet village kitchen need very different cleaning intervals. Grease readings and BESA’s minimum intervals set the schedule for each.

Across England, including IG1, the responsible person has a legal duty to assess and reduce fire risk, and a TR19® certificate and photo report give you a record of the work.

Ilford: If you run a café or takeaway near Ilford station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits. Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Ilford is Barking Community Hospital, about 1.8 miles south-east.

What kitchen extract cleaning can’t fix

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Fire dampers that won’t close (that needs damper testing and remedials)
  • A grease trap that needs emptying
  • Damaged duct sections that need replacing

What your team can do, and what needs us

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

Why act early?

A clogged extract does not only raise the fire risk. Blocked filters and narrowed ducts slow the airflow, leaving the kitchen hot and smoky and the fan strains to keep up. Smells, dripping grease and condensation often follow.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Whether a survey comes first
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • Whether a written report and pictures are included
  • How VAT is shown on the quote

Multi-site and managed buildings

When the building owner and the occupier are different, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Greater London. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

Looking after it afterwards

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:

  • Refit filters properly after cleaning
  • Keep to the recommended cleaning interval
  • Clean grease off the canopy surfaces regularly
  • Keep the TR19 certificate and photo report in the maintenance log

Every clean ends with a photo report. It shows the system before and after, part by part, and lists what was cleaned, any areas we couldn’t reach and the date the next clean is due.

Report drips, smells or a noisy fan early. Drips, odours and fan noise often mean grease is building, and a grease thickness test can confirm it.

Common questions in IG1

Do I have to clean my extract to TR19 by law?

TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19 is the benchmark used to show extract grease is under control.

Will I get a certificate after the clean?

A TR19 certificate, plus a full photo report. The report lists what was cleaned, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next clean is due.

What about areas you can’t get to?

The report shows them clearly. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, which we can install.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and the emergency line covers the rest.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and we’ll quote them together.

Why do insurers care about extract cleaning?

Many insurers ask for proof of regular cleaning to TR19, and many policies require it. Without proof, a claim can be refused or reduced, so it’s worth checking your policy wording.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes, of course. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we’ll propose a schedule with a fixed quote.
