Canopy cleaning across Brighton and Hove: what to expect
The canopy is where the extract system breathes in. If it’s coated in grease, everything downstream gets more of it. Our diagnosis starts there, and the cure is a thorough clean of the hood, the plenum and the filter housing. The work covers island canopies, grease gutters and baffle filters, and common reasons people get in touch are smoke hanging around the canopy during service and an EHO comment about the canopy.
The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, while signing off means the written report and pictures. The middle part takes longest, which takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up.
- Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
- We protect everything below once it has cooled.
- Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
- Plenum, housing, troughs and canopy are all cleaned and checked.
- The canopy is signed off with before and after photos and a next clean date.

What’s near Brighton
We work in commercial kitchens and buildings around Fairlight Primary School, St Martin's Church and Park Crescent pub. Other local landmarks include Brighton Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College (0.9 miles west), Academy of Creative Training (0.9 miles south) and William Clarke Park (less than half a mile east). Green spaces nearby include Newmarket Hill and Whitehawk Hill.
Where we work in Brighton and Hove
Our canopy cleaning work across Brighton and Hove takes in places such as Brighton, Hove and Carlton Hill and the villages in between. We cover every place we list for Brighton and Hove, 30 in all, and kitchens are cleaned around their opening hours, overnight and at weekends included.
London and the South East cover everything from city basements to rural kitchens. Wherever the site is in Brighton and Hove, the work is done to the same TR19® standard. Brighton and Hove includes coastal places, where salt in the air speeds up corrosion of roof-level equipment. We look for corrosion as well as dirt on coastal sites.
Brighton: If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St Martin's Church or elsewhere in Brighton, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. A kitchen near London Road (Brighton) station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.
Part by part
School and staff canteen kitchens
School and canteen kitchens often cook to set hours, so the canopy can be cleaned when the kitchen is closed. Holidays and weekends work well.
Grease troughs and gutters
Where a trough drains into a grease cup, that is emptied and cleaned too, and we’ll show staff where it is.
What happens if it’s left?
Fresh grease comes off far more easily than old. Heat from the range bakes canopy grease into a hard, dark layer, which makes a later clean slower and harder.
Questions to ask before booking
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- Whether VAT is included
- Whether the quote is based on a survey or pictures
- What records you will receive afterwards
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that’s where we come in.
What affects the cost of canopy cleaning
The diagnosis comes before the price. We look at:
- Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
- Site rules, permits and inductions
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
- How many systems or sites are involved
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before we start.
What we need to know
A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:
- Your last certificate, test record or report
- A few general shots of the system
- Problems your staff have spotted
- The site address and the type of premises
Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.
Why it fails
Grease that runs down the inside of a canopy gathers in its gutters and troughs. If they’re not emptied, they fill and overflow, and grease ends up dripping from the canopy edge.
What we’re most often called out for:
- Fat running down the front of the hood
- A canopy that no longer draws the smoke away
- Wet, greasy drips from the hood
- Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
FAQs for Brighton and Hove
Can I just have the canopy cleaned instead of the whole system?
You can have the canopy cleaned on its own, but it won’t cover the ductwork or fan. For TR19, the whole system needs cleaning, at intervals set by BESA guidance.
What do you do to protect the area?
With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. The work is kept contained and leave the area clean.
What accreditations do you have?
We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.
Who has the legal duty for fire safety?
It depends on the building. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent.
Do you work in Brighton and Hove?
Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of South East England, and that includes Brighton and Hove.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we’ll suggest a schedule and quote for it.
Where does the waste go?
We take it away at the end of the visit. While we work, it’s kept contained so the area stays clean.
