Canopy cleaning in Hove

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Hove

Canopy cleans are done out of hours: evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Cooking equipment is turned off and cooled, then covered so the kitchen is ready when we go. If you’re dealing with a plenum thick with grease behind the filters and filters that clog soon after cleaning, we can put it right.

Many kitchens in a town like Hove were fitted into buildings built for something else, which can mean awkward duct routes, long flat runs and not enough access panels. Where the duct cannot be reached, new panels can be fitted, and anything left uncleaned is recorded on the report.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

How the visit works

There’s very little for your team to do on the day. Someone lets us in at the agreed time and shows us where everything is, and we take it from there. Before we leave, the area is tidied and the paperwork follows. Send us pictures of the system and we can plan most of a visit in Hove before we arrive.

  1. We start by checking the canopy and what’s behind its filters.
  2. We protect everything below once it has cooled.
  3. Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
  4. We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
  5. The canopy is signed off with before and after photos and a next clean date.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before work begins.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

For anyone managing more than one site, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too in Hove and across Brighton and Hove. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.

Common questions in Hove

Can the work in Hove be done at night or at weekends?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. The site is handed back ready to open. When you phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, mention when the site is quiet.

Do you clean school canteen extracts around Hove out of term?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. Around Hove, the Food Standards Agency lists about 38 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Just call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with your term dates and we will plan around them.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, to suit the system and how it’s used.

Which sectors do you work in?

Commercial premises of every kind: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. We fit the work around how the site operates.

Why is my canopy dripping grease?

A full trough, gaps around the filters or a coated plenum. We clean the canopy, plenum and troughs and tell you what we find.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not normally. We need the work area to ourselves while we’re on site, so we book a time when it would be closed anyway.

How much does canopy cleaning cost?

Size, condition, access and working hours all affect the cost. Ask us for a fixed quote and we’ll typically reply within one working day.

What information do you need?

Only a few details: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and any previous paperwork make it quicker. After that, simply ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

How we price canopy cleaning

We quote each job individually. This is what makes a difference:

  • The condition we find in the survey
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • The times the site is available
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids

The cost depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

Asking for a quote

There’s no need for technical detail. Just send:

  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles

Quotes are quick. Send a few details and photos, and we usually reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Between visits

Once we’ve finished, these simple steps help:

  • Check all filters are fitted before service
  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Keep grease cups and drawers emptied
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated

Anything worth knowing goes into the report: bent or poorly fitting filters, a light cover that is cracked, or troughs that fill too quickly. We keep it to what matters.

Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

What canopy cleaning can’t fix

Before booking, it helps to know what’s not included:

  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)
  • Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think.

Where we work

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Island canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Wall canopies
  • Plenum chambers
  • Baffle filters

What we’re called out for in Hove

Filters that are missing, damaged or badly seated leave gaps. More grease reaches the plenum and housing than they’re designed to take, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Smoke hanging around the canopy during service
  • A filter housing caked in grease
  • Grease filters blocking between washes
  • Overflowing grease troughs and gutters

If you cook for passing trade around Hove station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer.

  • How VAT is shown on the quote
  • How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or photos

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Grease, kitchens and Hove

Hove lies within about 1 mile of the sea. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. Food Standards Agency data counts about 382 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 83 takeaways and sandwich shops in Hove and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Every kitchen among them that cooks under a canopy has a hood, plenum and filters collecting grease. Environmental health officers from Brighton and Hove council inspect food businesses in Hove. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Montefiore Hospital is the nearest hospital to Hove, about 0.7 miles east. Term dates shape school work: for a school like St Andrew's CofE (Aided) Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.
