Canopy cleaning for sites in Preston

Canopy cleaning in Preston, done properly

A kitchen team can wipe the outside of a canopy, but the seams, gutters and inner skin need more. Thick deposits are scraped off by hand, then the surfaces degreased to suit what’s there, using hot water or steam where it helps. Typical jobs include drips from the canopy onto the range and condensation running down the canopy, across canopy light fittings, wall canopies and island canopies.

Around a smaller place like Preston, kitchen extracts tend to belong to pubs, cafés, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. Quieter kitchens still collect grease in the duct, just more slowly, so cleaning is planned around how much it cooks and what the readings show.

We’re CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

When it’s something else

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out
  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)
  • Bent or broken filters

If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Wall canopies
  • Plenum chambers
  • Grease gutters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Baffle filters
  • Island canopies

Part by part

Plenums and filter housings

The plenum is the space behind the filters where air gathers before entering the duct. Grease that slips past the filters settles there, and it’s cleaned every time we clean the canopy.

Island canopies

Island canopies often have filters on two sides. We work round the canopy, cleaning each filter bank and plenum.

Questions from Preston

Does the sea air around Preston make a difference to canopy cleaning?

It can. Salt air reaches Preston, which is within about 2 miles of the coast, and it speeds up rust. We look at fans, cowls and fixings for rust as well as grease.

Who inspects food businesses in Preston?

Food hygiene inspections in Preston are carried out by Brighton and Hove council. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

Do you have insurance?

Yes, we’re fully insured. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor, for sites that check contractor safety.

Are you accredited?

Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and you will get one fixed quote.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes, any time. If something urgent happens, like a fan failing or damage after a fire, call our 24/7 line and we’ll talk you through the next steps.

Why is my canopy dripping grease?

Grease that builds up inside the canopy has to go somewhere. Once the troughs and plenum are full, it runs down and drips, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

Not in itself. TR19® is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs check against, and many insurers ask for proof of cleaning to it. The legal duty sits in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 in England and Wales.

Common problems we fix in Preston

Steam and condensation make canopy grease harder to deal with. Water vapour condenses on the cooler canopy surfaces and drips, carrying grease with it. The result is sticky streaks and drips onto the range.

Common reasons sites call us include:

  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • A filter housing caked in grease
  • A sticky, discoloured canopy
  • Grease channels that no longer drain

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Montefiore Hospital is the nearest hospital to Preston, about 1 mile south.

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Kitchen extracts in Preston

Preston lies within about 2 miles of the sea. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. The Food Standards Agency lists about 139 pubs and bars and about 10 hotels and guest houses as registered food businesses within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Preston. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. In Preston, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Brighton and Hove council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

Commuter trade near Preston Park station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands. For schools such as St Bernadette's Catholic Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is typically booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Preston

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Brighton and Hove. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

What happens on the day

There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, while signing off means the written report and pictures. The middle part takes longest, and that takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. We plan the journey to Preston and bring what the job is likely to need.

  1. We start by checking the canopy and what’s behind its filters.
  2. Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
  3. Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
  4. We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
  5. You get photos of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.

What affects the quote in Preston

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • How big the system is
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • Travel, parking and unloading

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before work begins.

What to send for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • A few general shots of the system
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Any previous report or certificate

Need a price for canopy cleaning? Please call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and tell us about the site. We’ll talk you through the work and give you a fixed quote before anything is booked.

What happens if it’s left?

Fresh grease comes off far more easily than old. Heat from the range bakes canopy grease into a hard, dark layer, so the longer it’s left, the longer the clean takes. Booking ahead lets us plan the trip to Preston at a time that suits you.

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we will go through it with you.
