Canopy cleaning in Westdene

Dripping edges and a sticky hood are the first things a visitor notices. What isn’t seen, behind the filters, tends to be worse. We clean both, so the canopy is clean where it shows and where it doesn’t. If you have condensation and grease dripping together and a canopy that no longer draws the smoke away, we can put it right, from grease gutters, canopy light fittings and plenum chambers onwards.

For a smaller kitchen near Westdene, a TR19® clean is the same job as anywhere: canopy, filters, plenum, duct, fan and discharge. The visit is booked around your opening hours, and the journey is planned ahead.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Westdene

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.

What a clean won’t put right

Canopy cleaning can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It does not solve:

  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)
  • A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out

Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will tell you honestly.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Wall canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters

When to call us in Westdene

Steam and condensation make canopy grease harder to deal with. As the canopy cools, condensation forms and runs with the grease. Drips onto the cooking line are a common result.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
  • Greasy streaks across the canopy
  • Poor capture at the hood
  • Overflowing grease troughs and gutters

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of the Ascension, or anywhere in Westdene, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

Canopy cleaning in Westdene: the local picture

At about 3 miles from the coast, Westdene is close enough for sea air to matter. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. Look up Westdene on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you will find about 30 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 15 takeaways within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Westdene. Every kitchen among them that cooks under a canopy has a hood, plenum and filters collecting grease. Westdene sits within the area of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Preston Manor & Gardens is about 1.3 miles south-east), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Montefiore Hospital is the nearest hospital to Westdene, about 1.9 miles south.

Westdene is about 2 miles north-east of Brighton and Hove, in Brighton and Hove. Whether your site is in the middle of Westdene or further out, canopy cleaning is available to all kinds of commercial premises, from a single unit to a large public building. 30 places in Brighton and Hove are on our list, large and small.

Work in BN1 and BN3 is surveyed, quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. If you need canopy cleaning at premises on Mill Road, Croft Road and London Road or anywhere close by, our technicians can take on the work. With the A27 close by, Westdene is simple for us to get to for canopy cleaning. Neighbouring places we cover for canopy cleaning include Patcham (1 mile north-east), Withdean (1 mile south-east), Waterhall (1 mile north), Preston (1 mile south-east) and West Blatchington (1 mile south-west). Further out, we also cover Carlton Hill (3 miles south-east), Hanover (3 miles south-east), Kemptown (3 miles south-east), Whitehawk (3 miles south-east), Bevendean (3 miles south-east) and Saltdean (7 miles south-east).

Around Westdene

Locally, jobs take us to businesses close to Varndean College, Withdean and Westdene Woods and The Sportsman pub. The nearest railway station is Preston Park station, roughly 1 mile south of the centre. Nearby you’ll also find Clayton Castle (3.5 miles north) and British Engineerium (1.2 miles south-west). Open spaces near Westdene include Ladies Mile and Wolstonbury Hill.

What the work involves, part by part

Plenums and filter housings

Behind neglected filters, the plenum can be heavily coated. We remove thick grease by hand, then degrease.

Pub and hotel kitchens

Pub and hotel kitchens can cook from breakfast to late evening. Long hours mean the canopy collects grease fast, and canopy cleans between full cleans can help.

How we price canopy cleaning

Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • The condition we find in the survey
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • Whether several sites go on one quote

The cost depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

Asking for a quote

Before you ask for a quote, gather:

  • A few general shots of the system
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either from pictures and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work, before work begins.

What we do, step by step

We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the job takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Around Westdene, access is usually simpler than in a town centre, though gates and roof access are worth mentioning.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and photos are taken.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand

We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To start, call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.

Advice

What staff can safely do

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Your questions about canopy cleaning in Westdene

Can sea air affect canopy cleaning in Westdene?

It can. Westdene is within about 3 miles of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion. Rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings are checked for corrosion as well as grease.

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Westdene?

Kitchens in Westdene are inspected by Brighton and Hove council’s environmental health officers. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

What do you do to protect the area?

We start with protection: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. We tidy up and take our waste away before we leave.

Where does the waste go?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. None of it is left on site.

How long is a canopy clean?

Size and build-up decide it. As a guide, it takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we’ll propose a schedule with a fixed quote.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

Any commercial site with kitchens or ventilation, from a small pub to a hospital. We work with hotels, schools, care homes, offices, retail and leisure sites.

How far ahead should we book?

That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.
