TR19 inspection across The Hale

How we handle TR19 inspection in The Hale

Many insurers ask for proof that kitchen extract systems are cleaned and inspected to TR19®. Missing records can lead to a claim being reduced or refused. Our TR19 audits give sites in The Hale and across Greater London a clear record of the system’s condition. The work covers insurer audits, wet film thickness tests and pre-clean surveys, and people most often call us about missing access panels found on survey and systems cleaned on a calendar with no measurements.

Kitchens in The Hale, like many across London, can share a building with flats or offices, with the duct running up through shared risers. Grease in a duct like that is a fire risk to the whole building, not just the kitchen, so a regular TR19® clean protects everyone in it.

Every visit ends with a written report and photos, so there’s a dated record of the work. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

The process

We are used to working while the site is closed. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems. Most London sites can’t stop for the day, so work in The Hale is normally done overnight, early in the morning or at weekends.

  1. First we book a time that will not disrupt cooking.
  2. We look over the canopy, plenum, ducts, fan and discharge.
  3. Grease thickness is measured at set points by WFTT or DTT.
  4. We photograph the test points and record any sections we cannot reach.
  5. We send a report setting out the readings, pictures and next steps.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

Advice

What affects the cost of TR19 inspection

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • The scale of the work
  • The condition of the system
  • Where the site is and how we reach it

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before any work starts.

What to send for a quote

To help us quote quickly, send us:

  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • A few general shots of the system

Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and pictures, and we normally reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

Why it’s worth doing now in The Hale

A pre-clean survey avoids surprises on the night. Access problems are spotted in advance rather than on the night, and the quote reflects the real job. Every month a London system goes without attention adds to what has to be done later.

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why every job is surveyed first, and the price is agreed before we start.

Why The Hale businesses choose us

  • One number for every site across the South East and London
  • Photo reports with every job
  • In business since 2009
  • Survey first, then a fixed quote

Looking after it afterwards

Once we have finished, these simple steps help:

  • Do not box in or cover duct access panels
  • Tell us if menus or opening hours change
  • Send TR19 audit reports to your insurer on request
  • Book the next test on the date in the report

The audit report is set out to pass straight to your insurer or broker, including readings, photos and any inaccessible sections.

Keep all TR19 records together so the history is easy to show.

What the work involves, part by part

Vertical risers

Risers in multi-storey buildings can pass through other areas, so we arrange access ahead of time.

Restaurants, pubs and hotels

Heavy use under BESA guidance, 12 to 16 hours a day, means a clean at least every 3 months, with testing showing whether more is needed.

Questions from The Hale

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in The Hale in the summer holidays?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. Around The Hale, the Food Standards Agency lists about 29 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Send us your term dates when you ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form, and we’ll fit the work in.

Which environmental health team covers The Hale?

Kitchens in The Hale are inspected by Barnet council’s environmental health officers. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.

What is a WFTT or DTT grease test?

It’s a measurement of how much grease is coating the inside of the extract, by WFTT or DTT. Each reading is recorded in microns.

How far ahead should we book?

It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.

How do you protect the area?

With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. We keep the work contained and clean down when we finish.

Which sectors do you work in?

Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a small pub to a hospital. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.

Signs you need TR19 inspection in The Hale

TR19® is the benchmark that insurers, fire officers and EHOs refer to. It isn’t legislation; the legal duty comes from the Fire Safety Order 2005, under which the responsible person must reduce fire risk, and grease in the extract is part of that risk.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Kitchens taken over with no cleaning records
  • Post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean
  • Parts of the system left out of past cleans
  • Ductwork where grease may be over the TR19 limits

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near John Keble Church, or anywhere in The Hale, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

What to look for in a quote

  • Proof of insurance
  • If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate
  • Whether a survey comes first
  • How VAT is shown on the quote
