About kitchen extract cleaning in SE8
A closed kitchen isn’t earning, so the timing of a clean matters. Cleans are booked for evenings, overnight or weekends, or during holidays where a site closes for them. Equipment is switched off and left to cool, the area is sheeted, and the kitchen is handed back ready to cook. The work covers discharge points, canopies and hoods and horizontal duct runs, and the jobs we see most are grease dripping from the canopy or filters and heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs.
We start by comparing what we find with the survey or your photos. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. From there, it takes as long as the system needs, from a few hours to several planned visits.
- Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the system and how it’s reached.
- We record grease levels at set points, then fix the price.
- We arrive after close, protect the area and contain the waste.
- Heavy deposits are scraped by hand and the system degreased to TR19® Grease.
- The sign-off: post-clean readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next clean date.

The countryside around New Cross includes St. James's Park Lake and Tower Hill.
Kitchen extracts across SE8
In SE8, we work in places such as New Cross, Greenwich and St Johns and well beyond. We cover every place we list for SE8, 10 in all, and kitchens are cleaned around their opening hours, overnight and at weekends included.
Much of our work across London and the South East happens in the evening, overnight or at weekends, so sites in SE8 can keep trading.
New Cross: Volunteers running a hall kitchen near St James's Church, or anywhere in New Cross, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. If you run a café or takeaway near New Cross station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits.
Why act early?
Every week without a clean adds another layer. BESA guidance says the mean should not go above 200 microns between cleans, and 500 microns or more at any point needs immediate spot cleaning. The longer it’s left, the bigger the job becomes.
What your quote should include
- What records you will receive afterwards
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
- Exactly which parts of the system are covered
- Whether the price is fixed
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.
If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.
When it’s something else
An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what this work cannot put right:
- Fat blocking the kitchen drains
- A canopy that’s too small or a system that was badly designed
- A duct that’s holed or coming apart
Looking after it afterwards
Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:
- Switch the fan on before cooking starts
- Empty any grease troughs or cups on the canopy
- File each certificate with the fire risk assessment
- Book the next clean before the date on the report
Any section without access is marked on the report. That is part of an honest TR19 clean, not a failing, and new access panels can be fitted so the next clean covers it.
Keep the outside of the canopy wiped and any grease cups emptied. It will not replace a TR19 clean, but it slows what reaches the duct.
What staff can safely do
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
FAQs for SE8
Which sectors do you work in?
Any commercial site with kitchens or ventilation, from a single café to a large school. We work with hotels, schools, care homes, offices, retail and leisure sites.
How much notice do you need?
It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.
What is TR19?
A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark.
What happens if you cannot reach some of it?
They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.
What paperwork comes with a kitchen extract clean?
A TR19 certificate and a photo report. The certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal, and the report shows before and after pictures, readings, any areas not reached and the next clean date.
Why do insurers care about extract cleaning?
Grease in an extract is a known fire risk, which is why many insurers require TR19 cleaning. Our certificate and photo report give you that evidence.
How often should a kitchen extract be cleaned?
BESA guidance sets minimums by daily cooking hours: 3-monthly for heavy use, 6-monthly for moderate use and 12-monthly for light use. Grease readings can show a shorter interval is needed.
