Kitchen extract cleaning across RH2: what to expect

A kitchen extract system is far more than the canopy you can see. Beyond the filters run the plenum, the ducts and risers, the fan and the point where air leaves the building, and grease settles in every one of them. Our clean follows the air from canopy to discharge, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The work covers discharge points, canopies and hoods and horizontal duct runs, and the jobs we see most are heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs and poor airflow at the canopy.

Our technicians bring everything the work needs, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. All we need from you is clear access and the right equipment switched off. The visit takes a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system.

  1. Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the system and how it’s reached.
  2. We record grease levels at set points, then fix the price.
  3. We arrive after close, protect the area and contain the waste.
  4. Heavy deposits are scraped by hand and the system degreased to TR19® Grease.
  5. Then the clean bill of health: readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next date.

What you will pay

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you are not sure what’s needed, call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

For landlords and multi-site operators

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

Different parts, different methods

Extract fan and discharge

Grease that reaches the fan coats the blades and the housing. We isolate it, open it up and degrease it.

Grease filters

Baffle filters are cleaned as part of every TR19 clean, and refitted so they sit properly in the housing. Damaged ones are noted on the report.

Why it fails

In RH2, as anywhere, grease gathers where the air slows down: long horizontal runs, bends, the base of risers and around the fan. The cooler the duct, the more grease drops out of the air.

Most sites get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Grease drips onto cooking equipment
  • Cleaning needed before an insurance renewal or survey
  • Rancid smells from grease in the duct
  • An extract that no longer clears the smoke

Why act early?

Every week without a clean adds another layer. BESA guidance says the mean should not go above 200 microns between cleans, and anywhere reaching 500 microns or more needs a spot clean straight away. Heavy build-up takes longer to remove than regular cleans.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
  • Whether a survey comes first
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • Whether they recommend a next date

Looking after it afterwards

How long the results last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Keep the extract on whenever the range is lit
  • Empty any grease troughs or cups on the canopy
  • Clean the grease filters regularly between TR19 cleans
  • Tell us when the extract starts to drip or smell

If we couldn’t get into part of the duct, the report says so plainly. A TR19 report should record what wasn’t cleaned as well as what was, and we can fit access panels so it’s reached next time.

Regular filter cleaning is the simplest thing a kitchen can do. Clean, well-fitted filters catch more fat before it reaches the duct, which slows build-up further down the system.

Your questions about kitchen extract cleaning in RH2

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes, of course. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we will suggest a schedule and quote for it.

Do you cover RH2?

Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of South East England, and that includes RH2.

Why do insurers care about extract cleaning?

Grease in an extract is a known fire risk, which is why many insurers require TR19 cleaning. Each clean gives you a certificate and photo report to show them.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. You’ll know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.

How long does a kitchen extract clean take?

That depends on the size of the system, the amount of grease and the number of access points. As a guide, it takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one.

How often should a kitchen extract be cleaned?

That comes down mainly to daily cooking hours. BESA’s minimums run from every 3 months for heavy use to every 12 months for light use. Your report gives a recommended next clean date.

What accreditations do you hold?

Our work is to BESA TR19® Grease, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, and certificates go through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009.
