About kitchen extract cleaning in RH3

Any kitchen we clean in RH3 gets exactly the same specification as everywhere else we work. We survey first and take grease readings, then clean the canopy, plenum, filters, ducts, fan and discharge. You get a TR19 certificate and a photo report at the end. We’re often asked to deal with rancid smells from grease in the duct and grease dripping from the canopy or filters, on vertical risers, discharge points and canopies and hoods.

When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the photos you sent. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. From there, it takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system.

  1. We survey the system, from your photos or on site, canopy to discharge.
  2. We take grease readings at set points and give you a fixed quote.
  3. On the night, the equipment is off and cool and the kitchen is sheeted.
  4. We work through the system from the canopy to the fan and discharge.
  5. We re-test, photograph and send your certificate and photo report.

Kitchen extract cleaning across RH3: local notes

From Brockham, Betchworth and Strood Green to its smaller places, RH3 has kitchens of every size. Every one gets the same full TR19® clean, from the canopy to the discharge.

From central London kitchens to coastal hotels and country pubs, London and the South East have every kind of site. The same TR19® standard applies to all of them, in RH3 and beyond.

Brockham: A hospital like Headley Court, about 3.9 miles north, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. Polesden Lacey, about 4.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses near Brockham; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions.

What affects the quote in RH3

The diagnosis comes before the price. The main factors are:

  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • How big the system is

Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we’ll price it together.

What we need to know

To help us quote quickly, send us:

  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • Any previous report or certificate

For a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. We normally come back within one working day.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.

What the work involves, part by part

Grease filters

Between TR19 cleans, filters still need regular cleaning, and a filter exchange service can take that off your hands. Clean filters slow the build-up further down the system.

Ductwork and risers

Vertical risers carry the air up through the building, and grease often collects at the bottom of them. Access panels along the riser let us clean it in sections.

What we’re called out for in RH3

Cooking fat leaves the pan as a fine vapour. As the air cools on its way through the duct, the fat condenses and sticks, building a layer that gets thicker with every service. Filters catch some of it, but never all.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Cleaning needed before an insurance renewal or survey
  • Rancid smells from grease in the duct
  • Grease drips onto cooking equipment
  • Ductwork thick with old, hardened grease

Looking after it afterwards

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Do not let the canopy gutters overflow
  • Diarise the next clean as soon as you get the certificate
  • File each certificate with the fire risk assessment
  • Clean the grease filters regularly between TR19 cleans

A TR19 certificate notes the date, the location and the technician. Keep it in the maintenance log with your fire risk assessment so it’s ready when anyone asks to see it.

Tell whoever looks after the system when something changes. Grease dripping from the canopy, a burning smell or a fan that sounds rough are all signs of build-up, and a grease thickness test can confirm it.

Common questions in RH3

What is TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

What information do you need?

Just the basics: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and the last report help too. Then ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos.

Are you accredited for kitchen extract cleaning?

We’re members of Vent Hygiene Elite, the scheme run by BESCA, and we clean to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

Which parts of the extract do you clean?

Everything from canopy to discharge: canopy inside and out, plenum, grease filters, ductwork, risers, extract fan and discharge, plus attenuators where fitted. Any part without access is noted.

How long does it take to clean a kitchen extract system?

Short systems are done in a few hours, while long runs and tall risers take longer and may need more than one visit. We’ll tell you how long when we quote.

What do you do with what you remove?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. None of it is left on site.

What’s the right cleaning interval for a kitchen extract?

That comes down mainly to daily cooking hours. BESA’s minimums run from every 3 months for heavy use to every 12 months for light use. We’ll recommend a date after measuring the grease.
