Kitchen extract cleaning across RH18: what to expect
Not sure when the extract was last cleaned, or by whom? Just call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with photos of the canopy and filters, and we will come back with a fixed price for the work in RH18, typically within one working day. The work covers horizontal duct runs, extract fans and canopies and hoods, and the jobs we see most are grease drips onto cooking equipment and rancid smells from grease in the duct.
Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that is an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the job takes a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system.
- We start with a survey, so we know every part of the system before we quote.
- Grease readings are taken at set points and you get a fixed quote.
- With the kitchen closed and equipment off and cool, the area is sheeted.
- We clean the canopy, plenum, filters, ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
- Finally the system is re-tested and photographed, and the certificate and report follow.
What you will pay
Combining work into one visit or one programme often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you will get one fixed quote.

Kitchen extract cleaning across RH18: local notes
From Forest Row and Wych Cross to its smaller places, RH18 has kitchens of every size. Each extract is cleaned to the same TR19® standard, canopy to discharge.
Across England, including RH18, the responsible person has a legal duty to assess and reduce fire risk, and each certificate and photo report is a record you can keep in your log book.
Forest Row: A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near The Parish Church of the Holy Trinity or elsewhere in Forest Row, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Queen Victoria Hospital is the nearest hospital to Forest Row, about 3.2 miles north-west.
Managing agents and facilities teams in RH18
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.
What your team can do, and what needs us
Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.
When it’s something else
Not every problem is solved by kitchen extract cleaning, and we will tell you before work begins. It will not put right:
- A grease trap that needs emptying
- A broken extract fan that won’t run
- Faulty fire dampers in the duct
Common problems we fix in RH18
We often find duct sections that haven’t been cleaned since they were installed. The usual reason is a lack of access panels, so those sections were never reached. Grease in those sections keeps building out of sight.
The symptoms we’re asked about most are:
- Years of baked-on grease in the ducts
- A system with no record of a TR19 clean
- Poor airflow at the canopy
- A kitchen taken over without any extract records
Aftercare tips
To keep the system working properly between visits:
- Clean grease off the canopy surfaces regularly
- Never cook with filters missing or out of place
- Report grease drips, smells or fan noise right away
- Wash or exchange the filters often
After cleaning, we re-test the same points we measured at the start, giving you before and after readings alongside the pictures. Your TR19 certificate is then issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.
Wipe the canopy down regularly and empty grease troughs or collection points. It will not replace a TR19 clean, but it slows what reaches the duct.
RH18 questions
Can you price the work without visiting?
In many cases, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Larger or hidden systems need a survey on site first.
What is TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
How often should a kitchen extract be cleaned?
That comes down mainly to daily cooking hours. Heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day calls for a clean at least every 3 months under BESA guidance, and lighter use less often. We’ll recommend a date after measuring the grease.
What should I send you?
Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, along with a few pictures and any previous report.
Are you accredited for kitchen extract cleaning?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.
What paperwork comes with a kitchen extract clean?
Yes, a TR19 certificate, along with a photo report. The report lists what was cleaned, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next clean is due.
Do you offer emergency callouts?
Yes. For anything urgent, such as a fan failure or damage after a fire, ring the 24/7 line and we’ll talk you through the next steps.
