- A whining or grinding extract motor
- A belt-driven fan that squeals
Extract fan repair in Forest Row
Not every failed fan needs replacing. Sometimes cleaning the impeller or renewing worn parts is enough, and that’s what we will recommend. When a fan is worn beyond sensible repair, we fit a replacement matched to the duct and the kitchen. If you have a knocking noise from the extract fan and a belt-driven fan that squeals, we can help.
In a smaller place like Forest Row, a failed extract fan means a closed kitchen, and a closed kitchen loses trade. That is what our 24/7 emergency callout is for.
We’ve been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

Why deal with it now?
It can be tempting to turn the fan down to quieten it. That reduces extraction without fixing anything while the underlying wear continues. A proper diagnosis in Forest Row gets to the real cause. A planned visit to Forest Row fits your hours; an emergency does not.
Every site is different, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.

Honest limits
In fairness, some problems need a different fix:
- Gas interlock faults that a Gas Safe registered engineer must deal with
- Grease build-up in the rest of the extract system
- Cooking smells reaching neighbours, which may need odour control
Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will tell you honestly.
Where we work
- Fan housings
- Fan motors
- Belts and pulleys
- Bearings
- Kitchen extract fans
- Roof and wall fans
The process
The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. Then we make the system safe and start. The work on site takes part of a day for most faults, with a return visit if parts have to be ordered, and we clear up before we go. For a place like Forest Row, we load the van from the survey notes so the work can be done in one visit where possible.
- We start with the symptoms, such as rattling, humming, slow running or a fan that won’t start.
- Power to the fan is isolated before we open the housing.
- Each part is checked in turn: motor, bearings, drive, impeller and fixings.
- We explain the fault and give you a fixed price for the fix.
- We fix or replace the fan, then test it running before we leave.
How to prepare
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions

Questions from Forest Row
What if my kitchen extract fan stops in Forest Row at night?
We run a 24/7 emergency line for failed extract fans, and Forest Row is part of our area. Call 0345 646 2711 and tell us what the fan is doing, or not doing. Tell us where the fan is and how to reach it.
Can the work in Forest Row be done at night or at weekends?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. That way a site in Forest Row doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.
Can you set up regular visits?
Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.
What happens to the waste?
It’s contained and taken away. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go rather than letting it spread.
Does the report say when we need you again?
Yes. The report recommends when the next visit should be, based on what we found and how the system is used.
Do you have insurance?
Yes, we are fully insured. CHAS and SafeContractor accreditation sit alongside it for clients who vet their contractors.
How do you protect the area?
Floors and surfaces near the work are sheeted before any work starts, and waste is contained as we go. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.
Why is our extract fan so noisy?
It can be one of a few things, including bearings, belts, grease and mounts. It’s worth having it diagnosed before the fault gets worse.
Looking after it afterwards
Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Report new noises from the fan early
- Avoid lowering the speed to quieten a fault
- Don’t cook with gaps in the filter bank
- Make sure every filter is in place and clean
Once we are done, the extract is back in service. We clear up after ourselves and talk you through what we found.
A scheduled maintenance plan keeps the whole system on a regular cycle, so the fan is looked at as part of each visit and wear is caught earlier.

What else we do in Forest Row
What we are called out for in Forest Row
Not every problem is mechanical. Speed controllers, isolators and wiring can all fail, and a fan that won’t start is not always a dead motor.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- A worn or slipping fan belt
- A knocking noise from the extract fan
- An extract that vibrates through the ductwork
- An old fan that needs replacing
If you manage a school such as Forest Row Church of England Primary School and the kitchen fan is getting louder, the next break is the time to deal with it.
Questions to ask before booking
- How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
- What hours they’ll be on site
- What insurance they carry
- Whether the quote is based on a survey or photos
How the job changes from site to site
Belt-driven fans
With belts and pulleys, there’s more to wear. More parts to inspect, but many faults are straightforward to fix.
Impellers and housings
Where an impeller is bent or corroded, cleaning will not help. It may be replaced on its own, or with the whole fan.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
