How kitchen extract cleaning works in Southampton

Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract systems since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Common call-outs are for fat running down the canopy edge and extraction mentioned at an environmental health visit, on horizontal duct runs, plenums and filters and extract fans.

At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. We point out anything that couldn’t be reached or needs a follow-up, and the same goes into the written report. The visit takes a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system.

  1. Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the system and how it’s reached.
  2. We record grease levels at set points, then fix the price.
  3. We arrive after close, protect the area and contain the waste.
  4. Heavy deposits are scraped by hand and the system degreased to TR19® Grease.
  5. Then the clean bill of health: readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next date.

Where we work in Southampton

In Southampton, a busy kitchen in a place such as Shirley, Regents Park and Townhill Park and a quiet village kitchen need very different cleaning intervals. Grease readings and BESA’s minimum intervals set the schedule for each.

We work across London and the South East, and Southampton is part of that area. Every job is surveyed first and quoted at a fixed price. Parts of Southampton are on or near the coast, where salt air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings. We look for corrosion as well as dirt on coastal sites.

Southampton: A kitchen near St Denys station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Saint Mary's or elsewhere in Southampton, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We will take a look and send you a fixed quote.

Fixed quotes for kitchen extract cleaning in Southampton

We quote each job individually. This is what makes a difference:

  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • What state the system is in
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • How many systems or sites are involved

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.

What we need to know

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Useful things to send:

  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • A few general shots of the system
  • The postcode and the type of business

We don’t publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To get going, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos.

When something else is needed

Before you book, it helps to know what’s not included:

  • A fan motor or bearings that have failed (that needs a fan repair or replacement)
  • Blocked drains from a neglected grease trap (a separate service)
  • An undersized canopy or fan

Aftercare tips

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Clean grease off the canopy surfaces regularly
  • Never cook with filters missing or out of place
  • Empty any grease troughs or cups on the canopy
  • Diarise the next clean as soon as you get the certificate

We hand the kitchen back clean, with the sheeting removed and waste taken away. Waste grease and water are contained and removed, and equipment can be switched back on once we have gone.

Run the extract whenever the kitchen is cooking. Switching it off early leaves vapour to settle on the canopy and plenum, and the next clean has more to do.

Part by part

Restaurant and pub kitchens

Grills, fryers and woks send a lot of fat into the extract, and measured readings show whether the minimum interval is enough.

Grease filters

Baffle filters are cleaned as part of every TR19 clean, and refitted so they sit properly in the housing. Damaged ones are noted on the report.

Southampton questions

What is TR19?

It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping, and it takes a risk-based approach.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

They’re marked on the report. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, which we can install.

What paperwork comes with a kitchen extract clean?

You receive a TR19 certificate and a photo report. Certificates are issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal, and the report shows before and after photos, readings, any areas not reached and the next clean date.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line, for problems that cannot wait. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.

How often should a kitchen extract be cleaned?

It depends on how many hours a day the kitchen cooks. BESA’s minimums run from every 3 months for heavy use to every 12 months for light use. We’ll recommend a date after measuring the grease.

What do you do with what you remove?

We contain it and take it with us. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go rather than letting it spread.

Which sectors do you work in?

Any commercial site with kitchens or ventilation, from a single café to a large school. We work with hotels, schools, care homes, offices, retail and leisure sites.
