TR19 inspection in Southampton: how it works
BESA sets minimum cleaning intervals by daily use: heavy use (12 to 16 hours a day) every 3 months, moderate use (6 to 12 hours) every 6 months and light use (2 to 6 hours) every 12 months. Grease testing shows whether your kitchen needs cleaning more often than that. Typical jobs include insurance renewals needing proof of TR19 cleaning and systems cleaned on a calendar with no measurements, on deposit thickness tests, access surveys and insurer audits.
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems.
- The visit is arranged for when the kitchen is not busy.
- Every part of the system is examined, end to end.
- Grease readings are taken at set points using WFTT or DTT.
- We photograph the test points and record any sections we can’t reach.
- We send a report setting out the readings, photos and next steps.
What affects the price in Southampton

TR19 inspection around Southampton
Across Southampton, from Shirley, Regents Park and Townhill Park outwards, kitchens range from town-centre restaurants and takeaways to pubs, hotels, schools and care homes. Each extract is cleaned to the same TR19® standard, canopy to discharge.
Across England, including Southampton, the responsible person has a legal duty to assess and reduce fire risk, and each certificate and photo report is a record you can keep in your log book. Parts of Southampton are on or near the coast, where salt air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings. We look for corrosion as well as dirt on coastal sites.
Southampton: School kitchens, at schools like Bevois Town Primary School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Southampton is Royal South Hants Hospital, about less than half a mile south.
Part by part
Restaurants, pubs and hotels
A kitchen running from breakfast to late service builds grease quickly. Regular testing shows whether the cleaning interval keeps up.
Extract fan and discharge
The discharge at the end of the system is checked as well, as grease can build up there too.
Leave it or put it right?
Finding a hotspot early means a targeted spot clean rather than a bigger problem later. Ignored, the layer only gets thicker.
What your quote should include
- Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
- What insurance they carry
- What paperwork you get at the end
- Whether VAT is included
Fixed quotes for TR19 inspection in Southampton
The survey tells us what the work involves. We look at:
- The scale of the work
- A single visit or a regular plan
- The condition we find in the survey
- Whether several sites go on one quote
Combining work into one visit or one programme often makes better use of the time. Mention every system or site you need covered, and you’ll get one fixed quote.
Asking for a quote
Before you ask for a quote, gather:
- A few general shots of the system
- Problems your staff have spotted
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- Any previous report or certificate
We don’t publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, and then give you a fixed quote. To get going, call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.
What TR19 inspection cannot fix
We’d rather tell you now than book work that won’t help, so here are the limits:
- The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment
- Design faults in the extract system
- Hidden runs that need access panels first
Multi-site and managed buildings
We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we’ll send a fixed quote.
Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Every visit ends with a dated report and photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
Southampton: your questions answered
Which sectors do you work in?
All kinds of commercial and public premises: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. Work is timed around how each site runs.
What does TR19 mean?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
How much does TR19 inspection cost?
There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: the size of the system, its condition, access and when we can work. You get a fixed price before any work starts.
How do you keep the site clean during the work?
By covering it before any work starts. The work is kept contained and leave the area clean.
Can the work be done while we’re closed?
Yes, and that is how we prefer to work. We book the visit for when the area is out of use, such as late evening, overnight or a weekend.
Do you cover Southampton?
Yes. We work in Southampton, as part of our work across South East England and London. For a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.
What do you do with what you remove?
We contain it and take it with us. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on rather than letting it spread.
