About our fire damper testing in The Mint

Wherever a duct crosses a fire-resisting wall or floor, there should be a fire damper inside it. Most are held open by a fusible link that melts at a set temperature, letting the blade drop and close the duct. A drop test shows that the damper still does that when it matters, and we record the result for every damper we test. Typical jobs include fire dampers that fail to drop shut and motorised smoke dampers due for testing, on wall and floor dampers, fusible link fire dampers and offices and schools.

In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, where the dampers are easy to overlook. The first visit starts by locating each damper.

Every visit ends with a written report and pictures, so there’s a dated record of the work. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Questions from The Mint

Which fire service covers The Mint?

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for The Mint. Failed dampers on a report should be followed by a record of the repair, so the file shows the problem was closed out.

Can you get to a site in The Mint?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, The Mint included. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

What information do you need?

Some pictures and a quick description of the system plus the address and your hours. We’ll ask for anything else we need.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, 24/7. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

How much time does a damper test visit need?

A visit takes a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many. Large buildings can be split over several visits, and you can call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form to talk it through.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes, every time. We diagnose before we treat: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need and the fixed quote is built on it.

Can you quote from photos?

Normally, yes. Send wide shots, close-ups of any access panels and anything that worries you, and a fixed quote typically follows within one working day. If photos are not enough, we’ll survey first.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, to suit the system and how it’s used.

What happens if it’s left?

An untested damper is an unknown. A test gives you a clear answer, and we can offer remedials for any that fail, which is far easier to plan for. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.

We don’t list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos, and we’ll talk you through it.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Multi-site and managed buildings

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we are happy to quote for all of it.

For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.

Common problems we fix in The Mint

Over time, dust builds up on the blade, the runners and the spring. If the duct carries cooking vapour, a film of grease adds to it, and either one can hold the blade part-open.

Look out for any of the following:

  • Smoke dampers that need testing through their controls
  • Fire dampers that fail to drop shut
  • Dust or grease build-up on damper blades
  • Dampers hidden with no access panel or hatch

If you manage a school site such as Liss Junior School, any fire dampers can be tested in the holidays.

Before you book anyone

  • Whether VAT is included
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • Whether they’re fully insured
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach

What we do, step by step

We start by comparing what we find with the survey or your photos. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. After that, the work takes a few hours for a single floor, with bigger buildings phased over more than one visit. In a small place like The Mint, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.

  1. First we look at any damper register, drawings or earlier test reports.
  2. Each damper is located and reached through its access panel.
  3. We release each fire damper blade and operate smoke dampers from their controls.
  4. We reset every damper that passes and check it’s left open.
  5. We report on every damper, with faults and suggested remedials set out.

How to prepare

  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system

Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you’ll normally have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

Advice

When something else is needed

In fairness, there are a few things this work will not fix:

  • Control wiring problems outside the damper itself
  • Ductwork crossing a fire wall with no damper fitted
  • Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls

Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Where we work

  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Offices and schools
  • Riser dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes

How we price fire damper testing

There’s no set price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:

  • What state the system is in
  • How easy every part is to reach
  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • Whether several sites go on one quote

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are unsure, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

Helping us quote

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:

  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

Need a price for fire damper testing? Please give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us about the site. We’ll talk you through the work and give you a fixed quote before anything is booked.

Fire dampers in The Mint buildings

Going by the FSA’s register, there are about 10 caring premises (care homes, nurseries and hospitals) serving food in The Mint and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Schools, care settings and hotels are the kind of buildings where fire dampers are commonly found. The Mint sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and keeping dampers working is part of the responsible person’s duty. About 3.9 miles north of The Mint is Chase Community Hospital, the nearest hospital. Hospitals are a good example of a building with fire dampers across many floors and departments.

Chase Community Hospital, about 3.9 miles north of The Mint, is the kind of building where dampers protect every compartment; smaller care sites need the same annual tests. If you manage offices, shops or flats near Liss station, the ductwork in them may pass through fire-resisting walls and floors, and any dampers need testing at least once a year.

The Mint is about 4 miles north-east of Petersfield, in Hampshire. The Mint gets the same approach as every site we work on: a survey first, a fixed quote, work timed around your hours and a report with photos. 683 places in Hampshire are on our list, large and small. There’s also a page for Portsmouth, about 19 miles away.

All of GU33 is covered for fire damper testing, from the main roads to the quietest streets. Nearby, we also carry out fire damper testing in Liss Forest (1 mile north-west), Liss (1 mile south-west), Rake (1 mile south-east), West Liss (1 mile south-west) and Hill Brow (1 mile south). We also work in nearby towns such as Havant (14 miles south), Horndean (11 miles south-west), Aldershot (14 miles north), Alton (8 miles north-west), Waterlooville (13 miles south-west) and Petersfield (4 miles south-west).
