Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Liss
BESA guidance is that fire dampers should be tested by a competent person when they’re installed and at least annually after that. Spring-operated dampers need testing every year as a minimum. Our job is to do the testing and hand you the paperwork that shows it. If you’re dealing with blades that jam part-way when released and buildings with no damper register, we can put it right, from fusible link fire dampers, offices and schools and motorised smoke dampers onwards.
Buildings around Liss may have just a handful of dampers, and each still needs an annual drop test at least, with a record of every result.
Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

Multi-site and managed buildings
We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Hampshire. Larger estates can be phased building by building around the people who use them.
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

There are about 8 caring premises (care homes, nurseries and hospitals) on the FSA’s food hygiene register in Liss and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Many buildings of this kind have ductwork through fire-resisting walls and floors, and the dampers at those points need testing at least annually. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service covers Liss. Liss questions
Do you cover smaller places like Liss?
Yes, Liss is part of our area, however small the site. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.
Can you come to Liss after we close?
Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. Your customers, staff or residents in Liss needn’t be disturbed. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.
Is a quote from photos possible?
Yes, if we can see what we need. Otherwise, we book a survey at a time that suits the site, then a fixed quote.
What do you do with what you remove?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. We don’t leave it behind.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes. Every job is surveyed first, from your pictures and details, or with a visit where necessary. A fixed quote follows.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.
What does TR19 mean?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
What accreditations do you have?
CHAS, SafeContractor, ISO 9001 and BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We’re fully insured and have been trading since 2009.
What we do, step by step
The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and pictures. The middle part takes longest, which takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. Visits to a place like Liss are planned ahead, so we arrive with what the survey says the job needs.
- Before the visit, we agree access, timings and any areas with restrictions.
- Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
- The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
- The damper is reset and its condition noted.
- Panels and tiles go back, and the results are written up.
Getting ready for the visit
- Tell us where we can park and unload
- Find the previous report, if there is one
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
How to get a quote
To get a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. We usually come back within one working day.
Advice
Signs you need fire damper testing in Liss
Fusible links and springs do not last for ever. A link can be damaged, painted over or swapped for the wrong one, and a tired spring may not drive the blade home, which only shows up when the damper is dropped.
Look out for these warning signs:
- Fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year
- Fire damper items raised by an assessor
- Blades that jam part-way when released
- Dampers clogged with dust or grease
Hospitals such as Petersfield Community Hospital, about 3.6 miles south-west, are a good example of buildings with dampers on many floors; if you manage a clinic, surgery or care home near Liss, the same annual testing applies.
What to look for in a quote
- What paperwork you get at the end
- How they set the interval to the next visit
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- What insurance they carry
Fixed quotes for fire damper testing in Liss
The survey tells us what the work involves. We look at:
- Whether several sites go on one quote
- When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
- Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
- Where the site is and how we reach it
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.
Asking for a quote
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

What the work involves, part by part
Fusible link fire dampers
Most fire dampers are held open by a fusible link. When the link reaches its set temperature it melts, and the blade drops to close the duct. Testing means dropping the blade, checking the full close and resetting it.
Schools, hospitals and care homes
Hospitals and care homes stay occupied around the clock. The sequence of testing is agreed with staff to keep disruption to a minimum.
Leave it or put it right?
A sticking blade caught on an annual test can be a small repair. Left for years, corrosion and build-up can turn it into a full damper replacement. You choose the date of a planned visit, and a breakdown never asks.
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why we survey first, from photos or on site, and why the quote is fixed before any work starts.

- A single point of contact for sites across the South East and London

Keeping the system healthy
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly
- Keep to at least yearly testing
- Keep ceiling hatches and duct panels easy to open
- Keep the damper register up to date after any building work
Share the results with your fire risk assessor so their assessment matches what was found. Faults on the report are worth closing off quickly.
Deal with leaks and condensation near dampers quickly. Rusted parts are one of the main reasons dampers fail to close.
