What grease trap cleaning can’t fix

To be straight with you, there are a few things this work will not fix:

  • Grease set hard in the drain run
  • A trap undersized for the amount of cooking
  • Collapsed or damaged drains, which need a drainage contractor

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will tell you honestly.

What we work on in The Mint

  • Restaurants and takeaways
  • Under-sink grease traps
  • School and care home kitchens
  • Inline grease traps
  • Kitchen waste pipes
  • Pot wash sinks

How we handle grease trap cleaning in The Mint

Smells from the sink, gurgling drains or slow drainage all point to the grease trap. We find the trap, empty it and clean it and run water through to check it drains. Typical jobs include an under-sink trap that keeps filling up and drains clogged with fat, across inline grease traps, pot wash sinks and school and care home kitchens.

Work in a small place like The Mint starts with agreeing a date and access.

The paperwork matters as much as the work. You get a written report with pictures after each visit, covering the work done, any areas we couldn’t access and a recommended next date. File it in your maintenance log so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

FAQs for The Mint

Can you come to The Mint after we close?

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. The site is handed back ready to open. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Will you come out to The Mint?

Yes, The Mint is part of our area, however small the site. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Typically not. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Bigger sites can be done in stages so parts stay in use.

Which sectors do you work in?

Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, as well as food production and leisure sites.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

Why does a grease trap need regular cleaning?

Grease and food waste build up until the trap stops working. Slow drains, bad smells and blockages follow.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, to suit the system and how it’s used.

Do you take the waste away?

We remove all the waste we take out. It is not poured back down the drain at any point.

What we do, step by step

Each visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, do the work, clear away and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes less than an hour for many under-sink units. The timing of a visit to The Mint is set by you, and the travel is our side of the planning.

  1. We locate the trap and check how it’s fitted.
  2. We make sure nothing drains into the trap.
  3. We empty out the fat, oil, grease and solids.
  4. We clean every part of the inside.
  5. The trap is refitted, tested with water and the waste taken away.

The Mint kitchens: local notes

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 4 restaurants, cafés and works canteens across The Mint and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). A grease trap in kitchens like these fills steadily and needs emptying before it overflows. Food hygiene inspections in The Mint are the job of East Hampshire council’s environmental health team. They look at the cleanliness of the whole kitchen: walls, floors, ceilings and equipment. Having the dates of the last deep clean to hand saves digging for them on the day.

School kitchens, at schools like Liss Junior School for example, normally have their deep cleans and grease trap work done while the canteen is closed. Chase Community Hospital, about 3.9 miles north, is the nearest hospital to The Mint; healthcare kitchens cannot stop cooking, so deep cleans are worked around meal times.

The Mint is about 4 miles north-east of Petersfield, in Hampshire. We provide grease trap cleaning for commercial premises of every kind in The Mint and the rest of Hampshire. Our area takes in 683 places across Hampshire, large and small. Portsmouth is in our area too, around 19 miles away.

Neighbouring places we cover for grease trap cleaning include Liss Forest (1 mile north-west), Liss (1 mile south-west), Rake (1 mile south-east), West Liss (1 mile south-west) and Hill Brow (1 mile south). We also work in nearby towns such as Havant (14 miles south), Horndean (11 miles south-west), Aldershot (14 miles north), Alton (8 miles north-west), Waterlooville (13 miles south-west) and Petersfield (4 miles south-west).

What affects the cost of grease trap cleaning

You’ll get a fixed price before any work starts. It’s based on:

  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • What state the system is in
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids

No two sites are the same, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.

What we need to know

When you call or email, it’s useful to have:

  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings

There’s no standard price list, because no two systems are the same. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, and then send you a fixed quote. To get going, call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

What staff can safely do

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.

Aftercare tips

After the visit, a few habits help the work last:

  • Get food waste into the bin, not the sink
  • Keep strainers in every sink
  • Mention any increase in cooking
  • Keep waste oil out of the drains

Scrape plates into the bin before washing up. Sink strainers help catch solids so less solid waste gets through.

Grease that gets past the trap sets in the drains. Once it’s there, it needs a drainage contractor to clear, so it’s far better to keep the trap clean.

What happens if it’s left?

For a kitchen in The Mint, a regular grease trap clean is a small, planned job. A blocked drain is an emergency, often at a busy time. Somewhere as small as The Mint, losing a kitchen or building to a fault is felt by everyone who uses it.

Combining work into one visit or one programme often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you will get one fixed quote.
