Extract fan cleaning across The Mint

Extract fan cleaning in The Mint, done properly

Kitchen extract fans come in different forms: fans on the roof, fans built into the duct run, and fans on an outside wall. Each is isolated and opened in its own way, and we plan that during the survey. The work covers discharge points, fan housings and centrifugal fans, and the jobs we see most are a smell of hot grease from the extract and grease stains around the discharge.

For a kitchen in or near The Mint, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

A written report with pictures follows each visit, so there’s a dated record of the work. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What we do, step by step

Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes a couple of hours per fan, depending on its size and the build-up. In a small place like The Mint, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.

  1. The fan is found and its type, access and isolation checked.
  2. It’s isolated so it cannot run while we work.
  3. Grease is scraped off the impeller blades and casing.
  4. Blades, housing and surrounds are degreased with care around the electrics.
  5. It’s closed up, run, checked and photographed for the report.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Clear the space around the work
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions

Aftercare tips

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. Our tips:

  • Keep records of every fan clean
  • Never cook with a filter missing
  • Keep access to the fan clear
  • Make sure the fan is included each time

When the fan is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If only the fan is cleaned, the photo report says so.

Stick to the interval for the full extract. Regular full cleans keep the fan from building up heavy deposits, in line with BESA guidance.

Common problems we fix in The Mint

Poor filters mean a greasier fan. When filters don’t seal, grease goes straight through to the fan, so the fan takes far more than it should.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Grease escaping from the fan outlet
  • A fan shaking on its mounts
  • An extract fan with no cleaning record
  • A smell of hot grease from the extract

If you cook for passing trade around Liss station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer.

Questions to ask before booking

Common questions in The Mint

Will you come out to The Mint?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Which council inspects kitchens in The Mint?

In The Mint, it’s East Hampshire council that carries out food hygiene inspections. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.

What if parts of the system cannot be reached?

We never leave them off the paperwork. You will know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.

Which sectors do you work in?

Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, plus food production and leisure sites.

What happens to the waste?

Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. None of it is left on site.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

The law calls them the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and where several people have control, each can have duties. Your lease and fire risk assessment should make it clear.

What should I send you?

The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, along with a few pictures and any previous report.

Should the extract fan be cleaned as part of TR19?

Yes, the fan is cleaned as part of TR19. Anything that cannot be reached is recorded, so the record is accurate.

Why it’s worth doing now in The Mint

An unbalanced fan gets worse, not better. It wears bearings and mounts and can lead to a breakdown and a kitchen can’t cook safely without extraction. Cleaning it early is far less disruptive. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re not sure what’s needed, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line for straight advice and a fixed quote.

For landlords and multi-site operators

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We are happy to deal with either side and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.

Grease, kitchens and The Mint

Food Standards Agency records list about 4 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens across The Mint and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Where they cook under a canopy, an extract fan is pulling grease-laden air through its blades every service. Food hygiene inspections in The Mint are the job of East Hampshire council’s environmental health team. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service covers The Mint. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

A hospital like Chase Community Hospital, about 3.9 miles north, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Hope Church or elsewhere in The Mint, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

How we price extract fan cleaning

The quote reflects the site in front of us. We consider:

  • How many systems or sites are involved
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • The scale of the work
  • Travel, parking and unloading

We do not list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.

What to send for a quote

Before you ask for a quote, gather:

  • Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from your photos and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before any work starts.

Different parts, different methods

Wall fans

Smaller kitchens may extract through a fan on an outside wall. We isolate it, then clean the blades and housing.

Inline duct fans

Inline fans can be in tight spaces, so we plan how to reach and clean them. If it can’t be reached fully, the report says so.
