How we price fire damper testing
Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:
- Any permits to work or inductions
- The times the site is available
- Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
- The condition of the system
Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before any work starts.
Asking for a quote
When you call or email, it’s useful to have:
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either from pictures and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work so you know the cost before work begins.
How we handle fire damper testing in Hove
Fire dampers sit inside ductwork where it passes through a fire-resisting wall or floor. A fusible link holds the blade open until heat melts it, and the blade then drops to shut the duct. Drop testing proves that this still happens, and every result is written down, damper by damper. The work covers hospitals and care homes, wall and floor dampers and motorised smoke dampers, and the jobs we see most are fire dampers nobody can get to and dampers affected by leaks or condensation.
Smaller commercial buildings in towns like Hove may have just a handful of fire dampers, but each one can seize if it’s never tested. Dust, grease and corrosion are the usual reasons a blade won’t drop.
The report is your system’s health record: dated, with photos, and showing what was done. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal and sits alongside the report.

Fire damper testing in Hove: local notes
At about 1 mile from the coast, Hove is close enough for sea air to matter. A damper that has corroded can stay open when it should close, which is why coastal sites are worth testing carefully. There are about 38 schools, colleges and universities, about 95 care, childcare and hospital premises and about 26 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses on the FSA’s food hygiene register across Hove and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Many buildings of this kind have ductwork through fire-resisting walls and floors, and the dampers at those points need testing at least annually. Hove sits within the area of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. When a fire safety officer audits a non-domestic building, maintenance of systems like dampers can come up.
If you manage a school site such as St Andrew's CofE (Aided) Primary School, any fire dampers can be tested in the holidays. Historic buildings that have had ventilation added later can hide dampers in awkward places; Preston Manor & Gardens, about 1.3 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the area around Hove.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Hove
Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Every visit ends with a dated report and photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.
Why act early in Hove
When something goes wrong, people ask what checks were in place. A damper test log helps show the responsible person kept on top of things, and you can only produce records for tests that took place. Dealt with now, it’s a planned visit around your hours rather than a callout when the site needs to be open.
What you pay depends on how big the system is, the condition it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before work begins, so you know where you stand.

FAQs for Hove
Do you do school damper testing in Hove in the summer holidays?
Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. Food Standards Agency records list about 38 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Hove. Just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos with your term dates and we’ll plan around them.
Does the sea air around Hove make a difference to fire damper testing?
It can. Salt air reaches Hove, which is within about 1 mile of the coast, and it speeds up rust. We pay particular attention to dampers near louvres and intakes, where salt air reaches.
Can you fix fire dampers that fail?
Failed dampers are reported and we can quote to repair or replace them. After the repair, we test it again so the record shows a pass.
What if parts of the system can’t be reached?
They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.
Can you quote from photos?
Yes, if we can see what we need. If not, a site survey comes first, and the quote follows that.
How often should fire dampers be tested?
At least once a year, under BESA guidance, plus a test when the damper is first installed. Some sites choose to test more often where the risk is higher.
Which accreditations do you hold?
We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.
Do you certify fire dampers?
What you receive is a written report of each test, damper by damper. Failures are set out with the remedials we’d suggest.
How it works
When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the pictures you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, it takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. Photos taken on a phone are typically enough for us to plan a job in Hove and give a fixed quote.
- First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
- Each damper is found and checked for access.
- We test fire dampers by dropping them and smoke dampers by operating them through the controls.
- Dampers that pass are reset, and failures are logged with what we found.
- We report the results and offer remedials on failed dampers.
Preparing for the visit
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
- Move anything stored near the system

Advice
Signs you need fire damper testing in Hove
Building work often happens right next to dampers. A cable run through the blade path, a knocked link or a wedged blade is enough to stop a damper closing.
Most sites get in touch after spotting something like this:
- Fire dampers with no recent test record
- Dampers that stick or won’t close fully
- Fire damper items raised by an assessor
- Dampers hidden with no access panel or hatch
Healthcare buildings such as Montefiore Hospital (about 0.7 miles east) rely on fire compartments, and the dampers in them need testing at least annually.

What staff can safely do
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.
Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Between visits
Results last longer with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:
- Book the next test before the year runs out
- File every damper report where your assessor can find it
- Update the register when ductwork changes
- Act on failed dampers rather than leaving them on file
Put the next test in the diary within twelve months. BESA guidance is at least annual testing, so it helps to book it before the date slips.
Deal with leaks and condensation near dampers quickly. Corrosion is a common reason blades stick.
