TR19 inspection in Hove

Insurance policies often require evidence of TR19® cleaning and inspection. Missing records can lead to a claim being reduced or refused. Our TR19 audits give sites in Hove and across Brighton and Hove a clear record of the system’s condition. The work covers pre-clean surveys, insurer audits and wet film thickness tests, and common reasons people get in touch are systems that need surveying before cleaning and sections of duct that can’t be reached.

Many kitchens in a town like Hove were fitted into buildings built for something else, so duct runs can be awkward, with bends, long horizontal sections and too few access panels. Sections we cannot reach are listed on the report, and access panels can be added.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

How it works

There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. The middle part takes longest, and that takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems. In Hove, the visit is planned around your opening hours, parking and access to the system.

  1. First we look at the system’s cleaning history, if there is one.
  2. We follow the extract from canopy to discharge.
  3. We note where access panels are and where more are needed.
  4. Grease readings are taken and photos recorded.
  5. We report back with readings and a fixed quote.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards

TR19 inspection in Hove: the local picture

At about 1 mile from the coast, Hove is close enough for sea air to matter. Corrosion on the fan housing and cowl is worth a look at every clean, alongside the grease. The Food Standards Agency lists about 125 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 26 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses as registered food businesses in and around Hove, up to about a mile and a half out. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Food hygiene inspections in Hove are the job of Brighton and Hove council’s environmental health team. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

Where a hall near Holy Trinity Church, or anywhere in Hove, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Hove is Montefiore Hospital, about 0.7 miles east.

Hove is about 2 miles west of Brighton, in Brighton and Hove. From the centre of Hove to the outskirts, TR19 inspection is available to all kinds of commercial premises, from small sites to large estates. Hove is one of 30 towns, villages and districts in Brighton and Hove where we work for commercial clients.

Our technicians cover all of the BN3, BN1 and BN52 postcode area for TR19 inspection and the roads nearby. If you need TR19 inspection at premises on Farm Road, York Road and Aymer Road or anywhere close by, we can help. Further out, we also cover Kemptown (3 miles east), Whitehawk (3 miles east), Moulsecoomb (3 miles east), Hollingbury (3 miles north-east), Bevendean (3 miles east) and Saltdean (6 miles east). What your team can do, and what needs us

A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

When it’s something else

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Ductwork that was designed or installed badly
  • Mechanical faults in the extract
  • The legal duty, which stays with the responsible person

If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will say what we think.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Pre-clean surveys
  • Insurer audits
  • Access surveys
  • Deposit thickness tests
  • Post-clean checks

FAQs for Hove

Does coastal air change anything about TR19 inspection in Hove?

It can. Hove is within about 1 mile of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion. We look at fans, cowls and fixings for rust as well as grease.

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Hove?

The local authority for Hove is Brighton and Hove council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

What types of premises do you cover?

Commercial premises of every kind: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. We fit the work around how the site operates.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.

How much does TR19 inspection cost in Hove?

It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. For a quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us with the site type, opening hours and a few pictures.

Do you work out of hours?

Yes. Much of our work happens in the evening, overnight or at weekends, so you don’t have to close during trading.

When should we have our next grease test?

It depends on how heavily the kitchen cooks. BESA’s minimum cleaning intervals are every 3, 6 or 12 months for heavy, moderate and light use, and grease readings help set the real interval.

What is grease thickness testing?

Grease thickness testing measures the layer of grease on the duct surfaces, using the Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or Deposit Thickness Test (DTT). The results are given in microns.

Keeping the system healthy

How long the results last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Report grease dripping from the canopy
  • Keep to the recommended interval
  • Keep the route to access panels clear
  • Have the latest report ready for insurance renewals

After the inspection, we send a report showing each reading, its location and photos. Keep it with your fire safety and TR19 records.

When cooking hours or the menu change, check the interval still fits. A quick grease test answers the question.

When to call us in Hove

Not every section of a kitchen extract is easy to get to, and grease can be missed there clean after clean. An inspection of a system in Hove shows where access panels are missing, so panels can be fitted.

The symptoms we are asked about most include:

  • Parts of the system left out of past cleans
  • Kitchen extract systems with no recent grease readings
  • Ductwork where grease may be over the TR19 limits
  • Sites with gaps in their extract records

Term dates shape school work: for a school like St Andrew's CofE (Aided) Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

Questions to ask before booking

Part by part

Canopy and plenum

The canopy itself is checked inside and out, and note where grease has gathered.

Schools, hospitals and care homes

In healthcare and care settings, kitchens may run from early until late. Readings show if cleaning is frequent enough.

What affects the quote in Hove

Sites vary more than people expect. The main factors:

  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • Where the site is and how we reach it

You won’t find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.

What to send for a quote

There’s no need for technical detail. Just send:

  • The site address and the type of premises
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.
