Extract fan repair for sites in The Pound

Extract fan repair for kitchens and businesses in The Pound

Everything a kitchen extract does depends on the fan. Once it turns noisy, sluggish or stops altogether, the cooking area soon fills with heat and fumes. We find out why and put it right with a repair or a replacement. Common call-outs are for vibration spreading from the fan into the ducts and a squealing belt on start-up, on kitchen extract fans, belts and pulleys and fan housings.

In a village or hamlet like The Pound, the kitchens with extract fans are few, wherever there are any. A failed fan stops the kitchen, and our 24/7 emergency line covers rural addresses too.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. We are also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

What staff can safely do

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.

The process

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. We point out anything that couldn’t be reached or needs a follow-up, and it goes on the report too. The visit takes a few hours on site, depending on the fault and the access to the fan. For a village or hamlet like The Pound, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.

  1. First, you tell us the symptoms: noise, shaking, weak extraction or no power.
  2. The fan is isolated and opened up so we can see inside.
  3. Each part is checked in turn: motor, bearings, drive, impeller and fixings.
  4. We explain the fault and give you a fixed price for the fix.
  5. Once the work is done, we run the fan and check it’s steady and quiet.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand

How to get a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Advice

The Pound: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like The Pound?

Yes. The Pound is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Can you come out to a failed extract fan in The Pound out of hours?

Day or night, a failed fan in The Pound can be reported on our emergency line. Use 0345 646 2711, our emergency number, at any time. Let us know whether the fan is silent, noisy or tripping the power.

Do you recommend a next date?

Yes. The recommended date is on the report. BESA’s minimum intervals for kitchen extracts range from 3-monthly for heavy use to 12-monthly for light use, and fire dampers need testing at least once a year.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not usually. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so you keep your normal hours.

How much does an extract fan repair cost?

The price depends on the diagnosis. Once we have looked at it, you get a fixed quote for whichever option you choose.

Is repair an option before replacing the whole fan?

In many cases, yes. A clean, a new belt or new bearings can bring a fan back and we only recommend replacement when repair does not make sense.

Should the fan be cleaned as well as repaired?

A fan repair on its own does not include the ductwork. We will tell you what we see and quote for a TR19 clean if it’s needed.

How much time does a fan repair need?

Most fan jobs take an hour or two to diagnose, then longer if parts or a new fan are needed, including testing. We’ll fit it around the kitchen’s hours wherever we can.

What we are called out for in The Pound

Fan bearings don’t last for ever, especially in a hot, greasy airstream. As they wear, you hear a whine or a rumble and a seized bearing stops the fan.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Weak extraction and a smoky kitchen
  • A fan shaking on its mountings
  • A worn or slipping fan belt
  • A dead fan motor

If a fan fails in The Pound at night or at a weekend, our emergency line is open.

What your quote should include

  • When the next visit should be, and why
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • What happens if part of the system can’t be accessed
  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or pictures

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Managing agents and facilities teams in The Pound

We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we’ll send a fixed quote.

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We can quote either party and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.

Between visits

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:

  • Write down when the fan misbehaves
  • Get a noisy fan checked rather than slowed down
  • Make sure staff know who to call if the fan fails
  • Never run the extract with filters missing

Where parts need ordering, we explain what that means for the kitchen until we return. We then come back and fit them outside your busiest hours.

Regular TR19 cleaning includes the extract fan. Keeping grease off the impeller is one of the simplest ways to protect it, so planned cleaning helps the fan last.

When it’s something else

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Gas interlock faults that a Gas Safe registered engineer must deal with
  • Odour complaints that need filtration rather than a fan repair
  • A greasy canopy and duct that a fan repair will not touch

If you are not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Fan housings
  • Bearings
  • Belts and pulleys
  • Kitchen extract fans
  • Fan motors
  • Roof and wall fans

What the work involves, part by part

Impellers and housings

A damaged or corroded impeller cannot simply be cleaned. It may be replaced on its own, or with the whole fan.

Direct-drive fans

Direct-drive fans are compact and common in kitchen extracts. If the motor has gone, a replacement unit is often the sensible option, and we will explain why.
