Canopy cleaning in The Pound, done properly
We’ve been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers island canopies, plenum chambers and wall canopies, and the jobs we see most are a sticky, discoloured canopy and canopy gutters full of old fat.
In a village or hamlet like The Pound, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are typically a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

The process
There are three stages on the day: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. The middle part takes longest, and that takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to The Pound.
- Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
- Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
- Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
- Plenum, housing, troughs and canopy are all cleaned and checked.
- You get pictures of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.
Getting ready for the visit
- Move anything stored near the system
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
How to get a quote
There’s no standard price list, because no two systems are the same. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, then send a fixed quote. To start, call 0345 646 2711 or email us.
Advice
Why act early in The Pound
Getting the canopy cleaned in The Pound now saves a bigger job later. It takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several, out of hours so service carries on. Left alone, grease keeps moving into the plenum and duct. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.
One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. The price is fixed before work begins.

Part by part
Pub and hotel kitchens
In pubs and hotels, the kitchen may be busy for much of the day. Long hours mean the canopy collects grease fast, and canopy cleans between full cleans can help.
Wall canopies
A wall-mounted canopy runs along the back of the range. Grease often collects where the canopy meets the wall, so we clean along it as well as the inner skin.
The Pound questions
Can you get to a site in The Pound?
Yes, The Pound is part of our area, however small the site. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.
Can you work in The Pound outside opening hours?
Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. That way a site in The Pound does not have to lose a day’s trading. Just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.
Are the filters cleaned too?
They’re taken out, cleaned and refitted. We check each one seats properly, because gaps let grease through.
Do we need to close while you work?
Usually not. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Bigger sites can be done in stages so parts stay in use.
What do you do to protect the area?
We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before work begins, and anything we remove is contained. At the end, the area is cleaned down.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes, of course. Tell us what you have and how it’s used, and we’ll suggest a schedule and quote for it.
Do you clean inside the canopy as well as outside?
The whole canopy, inside and out. We also remove the filters and clean the plenum and housing behind them because that is often the dirtiest part.
Who is the responsible person?
That depends on who controls the premises. The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent.
Canopy cleaning in The Pound: the local picture
Food hygiene inspections in The Pound are the job of Rother council’s environmental health team. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. The Pound sits within the area of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
A hospital like Bexhill Hospital, about 5.2 miles south-east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Parish Church of St Peter or elsewhere in The Pound, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.
The Pound is about 5 miles north-west of Bexhill-on-Sea, in East Sussex. Anywhere in TN33, we can carry out canopy cleaning at your premises. The Pound is one of 289 towns, villages and districts in East Sussex we cover for canopy cleaning. For sites nearby, see our Brighton page, about 23 miles away.
Work in TN33 is surveyed, quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. You’ll find streets such as Church Road and Linghams Lane, all of which we cover for canopy cleaning. Close by, we work in Ashburnham (1 mile north), Brownbread Street (1 mile north-west), Bodle Street Green (2 miles west), Wood's Corner (3 miles north) and Trolliloes (3 miles west). Larger places within reach include Eastbourne (9 miles south-west), Hastings (8 miles east), Bexhill-on-Sea (5 miles south-east), Seaford (15 miles south-west), Hailsham (7 miles south-west) and Crowborough (14 miles north-west).
What’s near The Pound
We work in commercial kitchens and buildings around Ashburnham Park and The Ash Tree Inn and the streets around them. For rail, the closest station is Battle station, roughly 4.5 miles east. A little further out are Bexhill Hospital (5.2 miles south-east) and Herstmonceux Castle (3.3 miles south-west). Green spaces nearby include Senlac Hill.
For landlords and multi-site operators
For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.
Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Every visit ends with a dated report and photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
Aftercare tips
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:
- Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
- Keep the fan on through service
- Empty the grease troughs before they fill
- Flag any change in how the canopy behaves
We clear away the sheeting, waste grease and water before we leave. Every filter is refitted and checked ready for the next service.
Keep the fan running throughout service and for a short while after. Turning the fan off early lets vapour settle on the hood.
What a clean will not put right
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- Bent or broken filters
- Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
- Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think before booking.

What affects the quote in The Pound
The price is fixed before any work begins. It takes into account:
- The times the site is available
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- How many systems or sites are involved
- The scale of the work
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.
What to send for a quote
Before you ask for a quote, gather:
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
- The postcode and the type of business
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
