Canopy cleaning in Hailsham: the local picture
Look up Hailsham on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you will find about 26 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 13 takeaways and sandwich shops in Hailsham and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Any of those kitchens with a canopy has a hood that needs cleaning inside and out. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service covers Hailsham. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Environmental health officers from Wealden council inspect food businesses in Hailsham. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.
If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near The Parish Church of Saint Mary or elsewhere in Hailsham, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. Term dates shape school work: for a school like Hailsham Community College, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

About our canopy cleaning in Hailsham
We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Common call-outs are for filters that clog soon after cleaning and a greasy hood noticed by an inspector, on grease gutters, wall canopies and canopy light fittings.
Around a town like Hailsham, extract cleaning usually means a restaurant, pub, takeaway or the kitchen of a school or care home. Each has a canopy, filters, ductwork and a fan to keep clear of grease, and each is cleaned to the same TR19® standard.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

When to call us in Hailsham
The plenum is hidden behind the filters, so nobody sees it build up. Kitchen staff clean what they can see, so the plenum often carries months of grease.
Look out for these warning signs:
- Drips from the canopy onto the range
- A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
- Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
- Filters that never seem to stay clean
Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Horselunges Manor is about 1.5 miles north), access may need planning.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
- Whether the quote shows VAT
- Whether they’re fully insured
- When the next visit should be, and why
Honest limits
An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what canopy cleaning will not do:
- Bent or broken filters
- Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
- A light fitting that doesn’t work
Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll tell you honestly.
Parts of the system we cover
- Canopy light fittings
- Grease gutters
- Plenum chambers
- Baffle filters
- Wall canopies
- Island canopies
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.
When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.
Hailsham: your questions answered
Can you work in Hailsham outside opening hours?
Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. The site is handed back ready to open. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.
Which fire authority looks after Hailsham?
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Hailsham. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.
What is TR19?
It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping and expects a risk-based approach.
How much notice do you need?
The more notice, the better, especially for out-of-hours work. Quotes typically come back within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.
Which kinds of sites do you work on?
Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a small pub to a hospital. We work with hotels, schools, care homes, offices, retail and leisure sites.
Are you insured?
Yes. Duct Doctor is fully insured, and the details are available on request.
What happens if you can’t reach some of it?
Anything we cannot reach goes on the report, with photos where possible, and we explain what access is needed, for example new access panels.
Where does the waste go?
We take it away when we go. While we work, it’s kept contained to keep the area clean.
Different parts, different methods
Island canopies
Island canopies often have filters on two sides. Both sides are taken apart and cleaned.
Wall canopies
A long wall canopy may hold several sections of filters. We work along the canopy section by section, with pictures for each.
What happens on the day
Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that is an evening, overnight or a weekend. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the work takes a few hours for most canopies. In a town like Hailsham, we normally work after closing or on a quiet day, so the site opens again on time.
- We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
- The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
- Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
- The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
- We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.
Getting ready for the visit
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
Get a fixed quote
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Why deal with it now?
Drips from a dirty canopy land on the cooking line. That’s a hygiene problem as well as a fire one, and EHOs look at the cleanliness of the premises and equipment. Booking now keeps it a routine visit to Hailsham rather than an urgent one.
The cost depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before work begins, so you know where you stand.

Multi-site and managed buildings
Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.
