Canopy Cleaning in Dover
Professional canopy cleaning in and around Dover, timed so the site keeps working and finished with a written report and photos.
- Canopy gutters full of old fat
- A canopy that no longer draws the smoke away
- Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
What staff can safely do
Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Canopy cleaning in Dover
Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Typical jobs include drips from the canopy onto the range and smoke hanging around the canopy during service, on plenum chambers, grease gutters and baffle filters.
Many kitchens in a town like Dover were fitted into buildings built for something else, which can mean awkward duct routes, long flat runs and not enough access panels. Sections we can’t reach are listed on the report, and access panels can be added.
Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with photos of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.
FAQs for Dover
Does the sea air around Dover make a difference to canopy cleaning?
It can. Dover is within about 2 miles of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion. Outdoor metalwork near the sea is worth inspecting at each visit.
Can a school canteen extract in Dover be done out of term time?
Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. Food Standards Agency records list about 13 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Dover. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.
Why is my canopy dripping grease?
A full trough, gaps around the filters or a coated plenum. We clean all three and point out anything that is causing it.
Which canopies and hoods do you clean?
Wall canopies, island canopies and single hoods over individual appliances. The method is the same: filters out, plenum and housing cleaned, canopy degreased inside and out.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
Not in itself. Insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19® as the benchmark, and many insurers ask for proof of cleaning to it. The law behind it is the Fire Safety Order 2005, which applies in England and Wales.
How much does canopy cleaning cost?
It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. To get one, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with the site type, opening hours and a few pictures.
Are you insured?
Yes. We carry full insurance, and we’ve been trading since 2009.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes, 24/7. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and the emergency line covers the rest.
Grease, kitchens and Dover
At about 2 miles from the coast, Dover is close enough for sea air to matter. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. The FSA’s data shows about 30 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 8 hotels and guest houses registered across Dover and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Kent Fire and Rescue Service covers Dover. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.
If you cook for passing trade around Dover Priory station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer. For schools such as Shatterlocks Infant School, kitchen extract cleaning is usually booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

Honest limits
We won’t sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so these are the things it won’t cover:
- Bent or broken filters
- Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
- Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
If you are not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning
Sites vary more than people expect. The main factors:
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- How big the system is
- The condition of the system
- Any permits to work or inductions
We don’t list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711 or email us, and we will talk you through it.
What to send for a quote
We can often survey from pictures. Try to include:
- Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- Any previous report or certificate
- Problems your staff have spotted
We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To start, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.
For landlords and multi-site operators
Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we are happy to quote for all of it.
Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too in Dover and across Kent. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.
Do you need canopy cleaning in Dover?
The plenum is hidden behind the filters, so nobody sees it build up. Kitchen staff clean what they can see, so the plenum often carries months of grease.
These are the problems we see most often:
- Wet, greasy drips from the hood
- Canopy gutters full of old fat
- Poor capture at the hood
- A hood coated in old grease
Where a hall near Parish Church of St Andrew Buckland, or anywhere in Dover, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.
Comparing quotes

- Whether the quote shows VAT
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- When the next visit should be, and why
Aftercare tips
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Clean the baffle filters often
- Leave the extract running until cooking stops
- Give the canopy a wipe after service
- Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
After the clean you get a photo report showing the canopy, plenum and housing before and after. It notes what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach, so the record is honest and complete.
A change in how the canopy behaves is worth reporting. More drips or quicker clogging often mean the cleaning interval needs looking at, which a grease thickness test can confirm.
How it works
Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the job takes a few hours for most canopies. Let us know how to reach the roof or plant area at your site in Dover, and where the van can go.
- We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
- Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
- With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
- Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
- Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.
Before we arrive
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
Getting a quote
Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before work begins.
