About kitchen extract cleaning in CT16
The canopy over the range is only the start of a kitchen extract system. Beyond the filters run the plenum, the ducts and risers, the fan and the point where air leaves the building, and grease settles in every one of them. A TR19® Grease clean deals with the whole route, not only the parts on show. Typical jobs include an extract that has never been cleaned to TR19 and a smoky, hot kitchen with weak extraction, on vertical risers, canopies and hoods and discharge points.
Our technicians bring everything the work needs, including protection sheets, the right tools and access kit. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. The visit takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one.
- We survey the system, from your pictures or on site, canopy to discharge.
- Grease thickness is measured and the price is fixed before work starts.
- On the night, the equipment is off and cool and the kitchen is sheeted.
- We work through the system from the canopy to the fan and discharge.
- Readings are repeated, photos taken, and your TR19 certificate and photo report issued.

Where we work in CT16
Kitchens across CT16 cook for very different hours, from all-day town-centre sites to part-time hall and school kitchens. The right interval comes from hours of use and grease readings.
London and the South East cover everything from city basements to rural kitchens. The same TR19® standard applies to all of them, in CT16 and beyond. Along the coast in CT16, many hotels, pubs and cafés are at their busiest in the summer, so it pays to book work around the busy season.
Whitfield: Bursars and site managers at schools such as Whitfield Aspen School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Peter, or anywhere in Whitfield, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.
Why it fails
A lot of duct grease gets there because the filters let it through. Filters that are bent, badly fitted, missing or left uncleaned let more fat into the plenum and duct, and from there it travels on to the fan.
Keep an eye out for these warning signs:
- Extraction mentioned at an environmental health visit
- A system with no record of a TR19 clean
- Fat running down the canopy edge
- An extract that no longer clears the smoke
What happens if it’s left?
TR19® isn’t law, but the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is. The responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which in a kitchen includes the grease in the extract. Cleaning to TR19 is the recognised way to show you’ve done it.
Questions to ask before booking
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
- Whether they recommend a next date
- What insurance they carry
- If they look at the system before pricing
When it’s something else
Kitchen extract cleaning can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not put right:
- An undersized canopy or fan
- A damper that sticks or has a damaged link
- A fan motor that has burnt out
Between visits
Aftercare is simple, and it helps at the next visit:
- Do not let the canopy gutters overflow
- Keep to the recommended cleaning interval
- Refit filters properly after cleaning
- Switch the fan on before cooking starts
A TR19 certificate notes the date, the location and the technician. File it with the fire risk assessment and the maintenance log, so it’s to hand when an insurer, fire officer or EHO asks.
Tell whoever looks after the system when something changes. Grease dripping from the canopy, a burning smell or a fan that sounds rough are all signs of build-up, and a grease thickness test can confirm it.
What your team can do, and what needs us
A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. That is our job.
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.
CT16 questions
Which parts of the extract do you clean?
Every part the air passes through, as far as access allows. Sections with no access are listed on the report, and extra panels can be fitted.
How much notice do you need?
It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.
How do you protect the area?
Floors and surfaces near the work are sheeted before we start, and waste is contained as we go. At the end, the area is cleaned down.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, with the emergency line covering every other hour.
What accreditations do you hold?
We clean to BESA TR19® Grease as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, and certificates go through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. We’ve been trading since 2009.
What do I get after the clean?
Every clean comes with a TR19 certificate and a photo report. They belong in the maintenance log so they’re to hand when an insurer asks.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes. Photos often do the job, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.
