Part by part

Grease troughs and gutters

Drips from the canopy edge often start in a full gutter. We clean it out so the grease has somewhere to go.

Wall canopies

A wall-mounted canopy runs along the back of the range. Grease often collects where the canopy meets the wall, and we clean that join along with the inside of the hood.

About our canopy cleaning in Farthingloe

Every TR19® Grease clean includes the canopy, but a canopy can also need cleaning on its own, between full system cleans. Where that’s the case, we’ll be clear that the ducts and fan are not included, so your records stay accurate. The work covers canopy light fittings, baffle filters and island canopies, and common reasons people get in touch are grease channels that no longer drain and grease dripping from the canopy edge.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with photos of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Looking after it afterwards

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:

  • Check filters aren’t leaving gaps
  • Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
  • Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
  • Flag any change in how the canopy behaves

Keep the photo report with your maintenance log, so it’s ready when an EHO, insurer or fire officer asks. Before and after pictures speak for themselves.

Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It does not reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

Grease, kitchens and Farthingloe

Sea air reaches Farthingloe, which sits within about 1 mile of the coast. Salt air speeds up corrosion of roof-level fans, discharge cowls and their fixings. Food Standards Agency data counts about 33 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 26 takeaways and sandwich shops in Farthingloe and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Each canopy in those kitchens catches grease on the inside of the hood and behind the filters. Farthingloe sits within the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Aycliffe Church Centre, or anywhere in Farthingloe, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Buckland Hospital (about 1.2 miles north-east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. Term dates shape school work: for a school like Aycliffe Community Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

What staff can safely do

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Why deal with it now?

Grease on the canopy is sitting just above the heat source. A flare-up can catch it and be drawn into the plenum and duct, where a fire is much harder to stop. A clean canopy takes that fuel away. If the system at a site near Farthingloe fails, there may be nowhere nearby to move to.

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.

Farthingloe: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Farthingloe?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Farthingloe included. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Farthingloe?

It’s Kent Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Farthingloe. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, to suit the system and how it’s used.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line, for problems that can’t wait. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.

What information do you need?

The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, along with a few photos and any previous report.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. We always survey first, from your pictures and details, or with a visit where necessary. A fixed quote follows.

Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?

Wall and island canopies, long cooking-line hoods and small single hoods. The method is the same: filters out, plenum and housing cleaned, canopy degreased inside and out.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

Commercial premises of every kind: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. Work is timed around how each site runs.

When it’s something else

Canopy cleaning cannot fix everything, and we will tell you before we start. It doesn’t solve:

  • A light fitting that doesn’t work
  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • A canopy undersized for the equipment

If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will say what we think before booking.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Wall canopies
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Baffle filters

What happens on the day

The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and pictures. The middle part takes longest, and that takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Visits to a village like Farthingloe are booked in advance, at a time that suits whoever runs the site.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by pictures or in person.
  2. The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
  3. We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
  4. Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and pictures are taken.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
