FAQs for Totland
Can sea air affect TR19 inspection in Totland?
It can, as Totland is within about 1 mile of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on metal. Rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings are checked for corrosion as well as grease.
Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Totland during the holidays?
Yes, holiday work suits schools best. With about 2 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Totland, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.
What does TR19 mean?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
How far ahead should we book?
Earlier is better, particularly for night and weekend visits. We usually quote within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.
Can you quote from photos?
Often, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Where we cannot see enough, we arrange a survey.
What about areas you can’t get to?
We record them on the report, with photos where possible, and we explain what access is needed, such as extra access panels in ductwork.
Which accreditations do you hold?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.
What types of premises do you cover?
Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a small pub to a hospital. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.
TR19 inspection in Totland
Many insurers ask for proof that kitchen extract systems are cleaned and inspected to TR19®. Missing records can lead to a claim being reduced or refused. Our TR19 audits give sites in Totland and across the Isle of Wight a clear record of the system’s condition. If you have kitchen extract systems with no recent grease readings and kitchens whose menu or hours have changed, we can put it right, from wet film thickness tests, access surveys and post-clean checks onwards.
In a smaller place like Totland, many kitchens sit in older buildings or later extensions, where the duct may cross a roof void or climb an outside wall. Flat runs collect grease and need proper access to clean.
Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.
Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
What TR19 inspection looks like in Totland
At about 1 mile from the coast, Totland is close enough for sea air to matter. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. Food Standards Agency data counts about 18 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 5 sandwich bars and takeaways within about 1.5 miles of central Totland. A WFTT or DTT reading tells each of those kitchens whether its grease is staying under the 200-micron mean. Totland sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
Church and community hall kitchens, near Christ Church or anywhere around Totland, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. Term dates shape school work: for a school like St Saviour's Catholic Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

When it’s something else
An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what this work cannot put right:
- Design faults in the extract system
- The legal duty, which stays with the responsible person
- Heavy deposits found on test, which still need cleaning
Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly.
What the work covers

How the visit works
A visit follows the same order every time: sheeting and protection first, make the system safe, carry out the TR19 inspection, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. On site, the work takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. Everything the job in Totland needs is worked out beforehand, from the survey.
- We agree a time when the kitchen is closed or quiet.
- The system is checked from canopy to discharge.
- Grease thickness is measured at set points by WFTT or DTT.
- Each test point and any access problems are photographed.
- You get a report with readings, photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the visit
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
Ask for a quote
For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. You’ll usually have a quote within one working day.
Advice
Part by part
Canopy and plenum
Filters can look fine while the plenum behind them is heavily coated. So we measure behind the filters, not just in front.
Horizontal duct runs
Grease settles on the floor of horizontal ducts as the air cools. We test at points along the run through access panels.
Why act early in Totland
A pre-clean survey avoids surprises on the night. Missing access panels, hidden duct runs and awkward fans are found before the cleaners arrive, so the clean covers the whole system. Even a site near Totland that’s only busy part of the week needs its system checked on a schedule.
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re not sure what’s needed, call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and photos, so records stay tidy.
Aftercare tips
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:
- Keep grease filters clean and fitted properly
- Tell us if menus or opening hours change
- Share inspection reports with your insurer or broker when asked
- Keep TR19 certificates, readings and reports together
The report recommends when the system should next be cleaned and tested, based on the readings and how the kitchen is used.
Keep all TR19 records together so you can produce them quickly.
