TR19 inspection in Shaw

TR19 inspection for kitchens and businesses in Shaw

TR19® Grease says grease should not exceed a mean of 200 microns between cleans, and 500 microns or more at any point needs immediate spot cleaning. Grease testing shows which side of those lines you are on. The work covers pre-clean surveys, deposit thickness tests and insurer audits, and common reasons people get in touch are sections of duct that can’t be reached and post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean.

Around a smaller place like Shaw, kitchen extracts tend to belong to pubs, cafés, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so cleaning is planned around how much it cooks and what the readings show.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

How we price TR19 inspection

Your quote is based on your site. We consider:

  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • What state the system is in

What you pay depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before work begins, so you know where you stand.

What we need to know

When you contact us, it’s useful to have:

  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Wide photos of the system and the area around it
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Shaw kitchens: local notes

Food Standards Agency records include about 28 pubs and bars and about 5 hotels and B&Bs in Shaw and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service covers Shaw. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order. Environmental health officers from West Berkshire council inspect food businesses in Shaw. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

School kitchens, at schools like St Joseph's Catholic Primary School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. A hospital like West Berkshire Community Hospital, about 1 mile east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. If you cook for passing trade around Newbury Racecourse station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer.

Shaw is about 1 mile north-east of Newbury, in West Berkshire. Sites in Shaw get the same service as everywhere we cover: a survey first, a fixed quote, work timed around your hours and a report with photos. Across West Berkshire, we cover 155 places, Shaw among them. We also work in Reading, about 15 miles from Shaw.

Work in RG14 and RG18 follows the same survey, fixed quote and written report as everywhere else we cover. TR19 inspection is available to premises on Park Lane, Shaw Road and Kiln Road and nearby roads. You will find Shaw on the A4, so it’s easy for us to get to for TR19 inspection. We also cover Speenhamland (1 mile west), Donnington (1 mile north-west), Speen (1 mile west), Bagnor (2 miles west) and Stockcross (3 miles west). Within a short drive, we also cover Burghfield Common (11 miles east), Hungerford (9 miles west), Spencers Wood (15 miles east), Calcot (12 miles east), Lambourn (12 miles north-west) and Burghfield Hill (11 miles east). Shaw is among the bigger places we cover in West Berkshire for TR19 inspection.

Leave it or put it right?

Surveying first means the clean goes to plan. Missing access panels, hidden duct runs and awkward fans are found before the cleaners arrive, and the quote reflects the real job. You choose the date of a planned visit, and a breakdown never asks.

A single site or a whole portfolio, we price it on the same basis: the work involved, the access and the timing. The price is fixed before we start.

Why Shaw businesses choose us

  • A written report with photos after every visit
  • A fixed price before any work starts
  • Evenings, overnight and weekends, plus 24/7 emergency callout
  • A BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease

When it’s something else

Not every problem is solved by TR19 inspection, and we’d rather say so up front. It does not solve:

  • A faulty or failing extract fan
  • Fire safety duties beyond the extract system
  • Sections with no access, until panels are fitted

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will tell you honestly.

What the work covers

  • Post-clean checks
  • Deposit thickness tests
  • Access surveys
  • Pre-clean surveys
  • Insurer audits
  • Wet film thickness tests

What we do, step by step

The first job on site is protection: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. The work on site takes a couple of hours for a typical kitchen extract system, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Around Shaw, access is normally simpler than in a town centre, though gates and roof access are worth mentioning.

  1. We go through any past certificates and reports.
  2. We follow the extract from canopy to discharge.
  3. Access panels are located and any missing ones noted.
  4. Grease readings are taken and pictures recorded.
  5. We report back with readings and a fixed quote.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
  • Tell us where we can park and unload

How to get a quote

There’s no standard price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To get going, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.

Advice

How the job changes from site to site

Extract fan and discharge

The extract fan and its housing collect grease too. They’re included in the readings and pictures.

Canopy and plenum

We look over the canopy, inside and out, with readings where grease collects.

Between visits

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Mention new equipment or longer hours at the next test
  • Share inspection reports with your insurer or broker when asked
  • Keep grease filters clean and fitted properly
  • Keep access panels clear and unpainted

After post-clean verification, file the results with the cleaning certificate. The pair gives a clear record of the clean and the check.

Keep certificates, reports and readings in one place so the history is easy to show.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. That is our job.

Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.

Questions from Shaw

Can you come to Shaw after we close?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. It means the site in Shaw keeps running as normal. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Which environmental health team covers Shaw?

That’s West Berkshire council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Shaw. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. You deal with one contact for every site across London and the South East, with visits on a regular schedule.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, to suit the system and how it’s used.

What do you do to protect the area?

With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. We keep the work contained and leave the area clean.

What’s TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

What does TR19 inspection cost?

We don’t publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: how big it is, what state it’s in, how we reach it and the working hours. We fix the price before we start.

Will you produce a report for our insurer?

Yes. Many insurers ask for proof of TR19 cleaning and inspection, and an audit report gives you that, along with any actions needed.
