TR19 inspection for sites in New Malden

TR19 inspection in New Malden

A pre-clean survey is the diagnosis, and the clean is the treatment. Readings, pictures and notes on access are gathered from end to end, so the quote and the clean fit the real system. The work covers wet film thickness tests, post-clean checks and deposit thickness tests, and common reasons people get in touch are extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean and kitchens whose menu or hours have changed.

Across London, many commercial kitchens are squeezed into basements and narrow back-of-house spaces, and the duct may run up through several floors before it discharges at the roof. For a kitchen in New Malden, that typically means a longer system to clean and more access panels to plan around.

The report is your system’s health record: dated, with pictures, and showing what was done. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal and sits alongside the report.

Keeping the system healthy

Once we’ve finished, these simple steps help:

  • Send TR19 audit reports to your insurer on request
  • Never cook with filters missing
  • Don’t box in or cover duct access panels
  • Store grease readings where your insurer can see them

After post-clean verification, file the results with the cleaning certificate. The pair gives a clear record of the clean and the check.

When cooking hours or the menu change, check the interval still fits. Fresh readings show whether it needs to change.

Grease, kitchens and New Malden

Food Standards Agency data counts about 142 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 47 sandwich bars and takeaways across New Malden and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). A WFTT or DTT reading tells each of those kitchens whether its grease is staying under the 200-micron mean. Night work suits London kitchens, and roads and loading bays tend to be quieter too. The fire and rescue service for New Malden is London Fire Brigade. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Kingston Hospital is the nearest hospital to New Malden, about 1.2 miles north-west. For schools such as Christ Church New Malden CofE Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

Questions from New Malden

Do you work at weekends in New Malden?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. That way a site in New Malden does not have to lose a day’s trading. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in New Malden?

Food hygiene inspections in New Malden are carried out by Kingston-Upon-Thames council. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.

What is TR19?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

How much does TR19 inspection cost in New Malden?

Every site is different, so each gets its own fixed quote. To get one, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us about the site and its opening hours.

Can you inspect our extract for our insurance company?

Yes. Insurers often want evidence the extract is managed to TR19®, and our audit gives a clear record of the system’s condition, with recommendations where something needs doing.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes, every time. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it, and the quote is based on that.

What types of premises do you cover?

All kinds of commercial and public premises: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. We fit the work around how the site operates.

What if parts of the system can’t be reached?

We record them on the report, with a note of where it is, and we explain what access is needed, for example new access panels.

Multi-site and managed buildings

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare in New Malden and across Greater London. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

Whether it’s one building or many, you get the same standard: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with pictures.

Part by part

Restaurants, pubs and hotels

Inspections are done when the kitchen is closed or quiet so the kitchen keeps cooking.

Horizontal duct runs

If a run has no access panel, we note it so panels can be added.

What TR19 inspection cannot fix

TR19 inspection cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t put right:

  • Installation problems, which fall under design guidance such as DW172
  • The legal duty, which stays with the responsible person
  • The grease itself, which needs a full or spot clean

If you’re not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

What the work covers

  • Deposit thickness tests
  • Post-clean checks
  • Pre-clean surveys
  • Insurer audits
  • Wet film thickness tests
  • Access surveys

How the visit works

The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, while signing off means the written report and pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes a couple of hours for a typical kitchen extract system. Expect the work in New Malden to happen after your last customer leaves, not during trading.

  1. After the clean, we arrange a time to check the system.
  2. The same access points are opened up.
  3. We repeat the WFTT or DTT readings.
  4. Photos are taken to show the condition after the clean.
  5. The results are reported, with anything missed flagged.

How to prepare

  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

Common problems we fix in New Malden

As hot, greasy air travels up the duct, it cools and leaves a film behind. It often collects where nobody can see it: the plenum, bends and horizontal runs.

Most sites get in touch when they notice one of these:

  • Cleaning intervals that may not suit the kitchen
  • Systems that need surveying before cleaning
  • Insurers asking for TR19 evidence
  • Extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean

For kitchens close to New Malden station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight.

What to look for in a quote

  • What’s included in the scope, part by part
  • When the next visit should be, and why
  • When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours
  • Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor

Our hiring checklist

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.
