About our grease filter exchange in Patching
An exchange visit in Patching doesn’t take long. The greasy filters come out, clean ones go in and make sure there are no gaps between them. Anything that needs attention is pointed out. We are often asked to deal with filters that come out of the sink still dirty and filters that leave gaps in the canopy, on restaurants and pubs, mesh filters and baffle filters.
In a small place like Patching, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.
The sign-off is always in writing: a dated report with photos of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

The process
There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes anything from a few minutes to an hour or so, depending on the number of filters. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Patching before we set off.
- First, we check the canopies and the filters in them.
- Any damaged or missing filters are noted.
- Greasy filters are swapped for clean ones.
- We check the filters are seated and the canopy is ready to use.
- We tell you if the plenum or canopy needs a clean.
Getting ready for the visit
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
Ask for a quote
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before work begins.
Advice
What grease filter exchange cannot fix
In fairness, some problems need a different fix:
- An extract that was undersized from the start
- A canopy that needs a proper clean
- Grease already built up in the ductwork, which needs a full TR19 clean
If you’re not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

Grease, kitchens and Patching
Food Standards Agency data counts about 3 restaurants, cafés and canteens in Patching and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Any of those kitchens with a canopy relies on its filters to catch grease before it reaches the duct. Fire safety in Patching falls to West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. It’s Arun council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Patching. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.
If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Zachary Merton Hospital about 3.4 miles south-west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. Ecclesden Manor, about 1.5 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses near Patching; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions.

Signs you need grease filter exchange in Patching
Hand-washed filters often come back still greasy. Grease lodges deep in baffles and mesh and a sink wash rarely reaches it.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Staff short of time to wash filters
- Grease dripping from the canopy
- A canopy running with filters missing
- Filters that leave gaps in the canopy
Term dates shape school work: for a school like Clapham and Patching CofE Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.
What your quote should include
- What’s included in the scope, part by part
- How they set the interval to the next visit
- Proof of insurance
- Whether the quote shows VAT
Looking after it afterwards
Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Make sure we can reach the canopy on exchange day
- Make sure no filter is left out
- Mention it if the kitchen gets busier
- Watch for grease drips between visits
We tell you if we spot anything in the canopy that needs attention. That might mean bringing a TR19® clean forward and we can book that in.
Saturated filters let more grease through. Getting onto a regular exchange now keeps grease out of the plenum and ductwork between full cleans.
Why act early in Patching
Once filters are saturated, more grease gets past them. The ductwork then loads up faster, and grease may build up faster than the cleaning interval allows. It’s simpler to plan the work at Patching now than to arrange it in a hurry later.
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re not sure what’s needed, call 0345 646 2711 or email us for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Fixed quotes for grease filter exchange in Patching
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:
- How many systems or sites are involved
- How easy every part is to reach
- Site rules, permits and inductions
- The condition of the system
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we survey first, from photos or on site, and the price is agreed before any work starts.
What to send for a quote
To speed up the quote, send us:
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- Your last certificate, test record or report
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
There’s no standard price list, because no two systems are the same. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, then send a fixed quote. To get going, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.
Patching: your questions answered
Do you clean school canteen extracts around Patching out of term?
Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. With about 4 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Patching, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Send us your term dates when you phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, and we will fit the work in.
Who inspects food businesses in Patching?
The local authority for Patching is Arun council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.
How long does grease filter exchange take?
That depends on how much there is to do, but for many sites it takes less than an hour in most kitchens. We’ll confirm it with the quote.
What is TR19?
A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.
Do you handle baffle and mesh filters?
Baffle and mesh filters are both covered. We check what’s in your canopies first and plan the exchange around them.
Which sectors do you work in?
Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a single café to a large school. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.
Is there a cleaning option for the filters we have?
Yes. Some kitchens prefer their own filters cleaned on a schedule, and others prefer a straight swap. Either way, the canopy isn’t left without filters during service.
What if parts of the system can’t be reached?
We record them on the report, with photos where possible, and we explain what access is needed, for example new access panels.
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: a survey first, a fixed quote, the work timed around the site and a report with photos.
